Fitch’s Figueroa 2nd at New Balance Nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C.

Austintown Fitch junior Gabrielle Figueroa placed second in the hammer throw at last week’s New Balance Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina A&T.

Figueroa’s threw 166 feet, 4 inches and the winner, Jennifer Slagus, a senior from Moscow, Pa., threw 167-5.

Boardman’s Giovanna Silvestri placed 16th in the shot put (38-4) and 27th in the discus (113-7) and Canfield’s Daisy Robinson was 31st in the shot (35-9 1/2). Warren Harding’s Justice Richardson placed fourth in the freshman 100 (12.19).

Boardman’s Nathan Jones was 20th in the 100 (10.95) and teammate Mark Hadley placed 19th in the 3200 (15:01.17). Boardman’s Brendon Lucas was 14th in the freshman 400 (52.76) and Nathan Hadley was ninth in the freshman mile.

Area junior golfers play well at Tanglewood

Blake Prince of East Liverpool won the boys 16-19 division and Michele Whiteleather of Canfield was third in the girls 16-19 on Friday in a Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf event at Tanglewood Nationals in Bainbridge.

Prince shot a 4-under 68, five strokes better than fourth-place Joey Cilone, also of East Liverpool, and seven better than fifth-place Jacob Harrah of Newton Falls. Luke Janci of Leetonia was 12th in the boys 16-19 with an 81 and Matt Hilditch of East Liverpool shot 87.

Whiteleather fired an 83 for third in her division and Zacharay Jacobson of Poland was 13th in the boys 13-15 with a score of 86.

Hannah Keffler of Canfield shot 104 in the girls 12 division and Joey Vitali of Warren shot 89 in the boys 12.

Winners Saturday at Sharon Speedway on Joy Global Night were Jim Weller Jr. of Hubbard in the Governor Insurance DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds; Matt Latta of Conneaut Lake, Pa., in the Barris Supply RUSH Late Models; Jonathan Taylor of Saltsburg, Pa., in the Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds; Bryan Wagner of New Castle, Pa., in the Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars; Jeremy Double of Bristolville in the HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods; and Travis Creech of Niles in the Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks.

It was the third win of the season for Weller who leads the Big Block Modifieds in points. Double, 17, posted his fifth victory of the year. Creech, a rookie driver, posted his fourth win of the season.

Coming up on Tuesday is Ohio Sprint Speedweek for the All-Stars with $5,000 on the line along with the Econo Mods for $350 to win and the Mini Stocks for $200 to win. Qualifying for the Sprints will get underway at 6:30 p.m.

Park’s playoff birdie earns LPGA victory

ROGERS, Ark.

Inbee Park took some time off for rest and relaxation last week following her win at the LPGA Championship. The world No. 1 looked every bit at ease on her way to a second straight win — her fifth of the year — on Sunday at the LPGA NW Arkansas Championship.

Park sank a 4-foot birdie on the first playoff hole against So Yeon Ryu, capping her final-round rally and once again reminding the golf world who is clearly in control of the LPGA Tour this year.

Sunday’s win was Park’s second straight in a playoff, following her final-day 39-hole effort at the PGA Championship. It came after she began the day two shots back of a group of four leaders, each of whom fell by the wayside as the South Korean took control at on her way to her seventh win in her last 23 starts.

Stadler holds off Couples with par

GLENVIEW, Ill.

Craig Stadler birdied four of the first six holes, then hung on to win the Encompass Championship by one stroke over Fred Couples by sinking a par-saving 12-foot putt on the final hole.

Stadler shot 1-under-par 71 at North Shore Country Club to finish at 13-under 203. Couples’ final-round 66 put him at 12 under, but he bogeyed the final hole.
