Curbstone Coaches host state track champs

Four area state track and field champions will be the guests of the Curbstone Coaches at noon on Monday at Blue Wolf Catering Centre when they hold their final luncheon meeting until September.

Warren JFK athletes Chad Zallow, who won both hurdles events in Division III; Carl Zallow, who won the 100; and Morgan Rice, who won the girls 100 hurdles, have been invited along with Salem’s Anthony Shivers, the Division II discus champ.

All-Star Sprints run at Sharon on Tuesday

HARTFORD

The “410” Sprint Cars will be making their first of four appearances of the 2013 season at Sharon Speedway on Tuesday when the All-Star Circuit of Champions comes to town for the 31st annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek. The HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods and Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks will also be on the card. This year’s version of Ohio Sprint Speedweek will feature eight nights of racing over nine days at seven different speedways with the Sharon event being stop number five of the popular summer tradition. Sharon’s race will pay $5,000 to win.

Gates open at 4 p.m. A drivers meeting will be held at 5:45, Sprint hot laps start at 6:10, qualifying for the Sprints will be at approximately 6:30 with racing to follow. Adult admission is $22. Kids 13 and under are always free. Pit passes are $35.

McMurray grabs pole for race at Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif.

As Jamie McMurray turned a corner on the season with a string of solid finishes, he picked Sonoma Raceway as an upcoming track he was looking forward to racing. He showed his comfort level on the 1.99-mile road course Saturday with a surprise pole-winning run. He topped Marcos Ambrose, a race favorite, with a lap at 94.986 mph. It was McMurray’s ninth career Sprint Cup pole, but first of the year.

Castroneves wins pole at Iowa but starts 11th

NEWTON, Iowa

IndyCar Series leader Helio Castroneves’ pole-winning news conference lasted barely a minute and ranked among the more sheepish in recent history. Castroneves knew he wasn’t going to remain on the front row for long. Castroneves claimed the pole for Sunday’s race at Iowa Speedway, but he will start 11th after an unapproved engine change. Penske teammate Will Power will start first.

Allmendinger captures Nationwide victory

ELKHART LAKE, Wis.

AJ Allmendinger slid past Justin Allgaier with seven laps to go, then defended his lead through a late restart and a pair of nerve-testing green-white-checkered overtime finishes to win Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America.

For Allmendinger, it was another step toward rebuilding his racing career after sitting out part of last season because of a violation of NASCAR’s substance-abuse policy.

Driver killed in 24 Hours of Le Mans race

Allan Simonsen’s death after a spinout cast a pall over the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The race still had more than 231/2 hours to go, but there was no call to stop it on Saturday after the first driver fatality in 16 years.

Just 10 minutes into the race, Simonsen spun and skidded into the barrier at the Tertre Rouge corner where cars typically reach speeds of up to 105 mph. The 34-year-old Simonsen was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries, race organizers said.

Police again search home of Patriots player

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass.

State police officers and dogs searched the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez again Saturday as they continue to investigate the killing of a semi-pro football player whose body was found about a mile away. The search of Hernandez’s sprawling home and vehicle in North Attleboro began in the afternoon and lasted for more than three hours. Locksmiths and several officers were involved, including one with a crowbar.
