Students in Kelli Silvester and Melanie Humphrey’s special needs classes participated in a class picnic with food, carnival games and more May 16.

Preparing for the picnic was a group effort. The students helped unpack the car, set up the games and went grocery shopping for the items to make some of the food.

“They practiced life skills when they went shopping to get the items for the party,” said Humphrey.

The picnic gave the students an opportunity to practice what they learn throughout the year.

“When they’re playing games they are practicing taking turns,” said Silvester.

The picnic also served as a farewell for the eighth-grade students who are leaving Austintown Middle School after this year.

“All the other grade levels get to have a picnic, so this is their way of celebrating the end of the year,“ said Silvester.

Students in Silvester and Humphrey’s class worked hard all year.

“I challenge the kids all the time, so this is a nice reward for them,” said Humphrey.

Other activities that Silvester and Humphrey’s students partipated in included trips to Subway, the planetarium, grocery shopping and bowling.
