The meeting room of the Poland library was turned into an American Red Cross post for a blood drive June 12.

Every day in Northeastern Ohio, the American Red Cross needs 900 pints of blood to distribute to 57 local hospitals.

Christy Sabaka, communications manager for the American Red Cross, said that blood drives are vital in obtaining the amount needed.

“We do about 20-25 blood drives in 19 counties each day,” said Sabaka. “Blood drives are important for us because they help us reach that daily goal.”

Sabaka attributed the American Red Cross’ success in meeting that goal to places like the Poland library.

“We can’t meet our goal without having sponsors, like the Poland library, who allow us to set up,” said Sabaka. “They are a great community sponsor and always have a spot for us. They are very important to the cause and help us to continue to meet our need.”

Dolores Kelly was one of many people to give blood at the Poland library. She said that she donates whenever she can.

“I have the type of blood that they can use for everyone,” said Kelly. “Once I found that out, I started to give as much as I could.”

Kelly is proud to donate her blood when she can.

“I can help someone I don’t even know,” said Kelly.
