Play cards at Shepherd

Rosselli earns degree

Anthony Rosselli graduated from Grove City College on May 18. Rosselli earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He is a 2009 graduate of Poland Seminary High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Rosselli, Jr. (Eleanor) of Poland.

4-H day camp set

The Mahoning County 4-H program will have its annual 4-H day camp in Boardman on July 2. The day camp is open to any youth between the ages of 5 and 8 (must have completed kindergarten).

Youth do not need to be 4-H members to attend. The fee is $25, and includes crafts, lunch and lots of fun and opportunities to make new friends. Day campers will be supervised by trained counselors and adults.

Registration and full payment is due by June 21. Camp will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited so get your registration in early.

Summer scholarship applications wanted

The Mahoning Valley Office of the Autism Society of Ohio announced that it is accepting applications for its inaugural Summer Camp Scholarship Program.

Funding will support the annual day camp hosted by Autism Society of Greater Cleveland from July 8-19 for children ages 3-19 at the City of Independence Old Recreation Building in Independence, Ohio.

Pink Ribbon Gold Classic

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will be at Squaw Creek – Avalon Golf and Country Club July 15. All proceeds from this event will go to the American Cancer Society.

Take a strategic hike

Join the MetroParks on a hike June 30 at 2 p.m. Chat about the new comprehensive action plan that will guide the MetroParks in fulfilling its mission through the next ten years. Meet at Ford Nature Center. The hike has a moderate rating and will cover three miles.

Explore Beaver Preserve

The MetroParks will explore the Beaver Township Preserve tomorrow at 2 p.m. Meet at the pavilion in preserve, located on State Route 165. For directions, call the Ford Nature Center. This hike has an easy rating and will cover 1.5 miles.

Discover Austintown park

Discover Austintown Township Park tomorrow from 2-4 p.m. Join Bill Whitehouse again to explore a different section of this park. Meet at Pritchard Gazebo. The park is located just east of Kirk Road Trailhead. This hike has an easy rating and will cover 1.5 miles.

MetroParks hosts open tennis tournament

The Mill Creek open United States Tennis Association sanctioned tennis tournament will be June 27-30. There will be multiple divisions starting at 12 years and up. For additional information and to register, visit tennislink.usta.com/tournaments.

Participate in Pilates sculpt

The Pilates sculpt class will be June 26 from 6-7 p.m. Using light hand weights, they tone the body with emphasis on core strength and control. The class is instructed by Certified Fitness Trainer Angela Lubonovich. Bring a mat and water. The cost is $10 per session or use your Scenic Fitness Card.

Ladies learn to golf

The ladies golf clinic will be June 26 at 6 p.m. Forty-five minutes will be spent on the range working on all aspects of full swing and short game. Afterward, play three to five holes learning various things like course management, etiquette, pace of play and club selection. Call the Pro Shop for details and to register. The clinic will be at Mill Creek Golf Course.

Short game clinic to be June 27

Whether you are a beginner or an avid golfer, you will benefit from this clinic on June 27 from 6-7 p.m. Fundamentals will cover chipping, pitching and putting techniques. Focus will be on technique, club selection, and when and where to play particular shots. Call the Pro Shop for details and to register. The clinic will be at Mill Creek Golf Course.

Take T’ai Chi

T’ai Chi Step One will be June 26 from noon until 1 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Ease stress, improve health and increase vitality by joining Marie Lew in warm-ups, breathing exercises and selected movements from a classic Chen T’ai Chi form. The cost is $10 per class.

Practice Yoga at the gardens

Yoga will be offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30-11 a.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Join Marina Perdos in the mornings and Karres Cvetkovich in the evenings for a blend of energizing yoga styles. Students at all levels are welcome. Bring a mat and small blanket. MetroParks hosts free concerts

The Metro Parks will host a free concert at the Judge Morley Pavilion. Angela Perley and the Howlin’ Moons will perform June 26 at 7 p.m.

Free open houses set

Every Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. beginning June 12 and running through August 14, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society will host free Hands-On-History Open Houses at the Arms Family Museum of Local History, located at 648 Wick Ave. in Youngstown. Each week will feature a different historical theme – “Celebrating the Fourth,” “My Town, Your Town, Youngstown,” and “The House that Olive Built,” to name a few. Hands-On activities will include arts and crafts, games, toys, artifacts, dress-up clothing and more.

Participants can spend as much or as little time engaging in the activities and each week will feature something for all ages and interests. The open houses are free and open to the public and all participants can take advantage of half-priced admission for a full Arms Family Museum tour.

Historical society sponsors summer camp

In celebration and remembrance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society will have an immersive Civil War Summer Day Camp for students ages 7-14. The Turning Points Camp runs twice, July 8-12 and Aug. 5-9, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day at the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, located at 325 West Federal St. in Youngstown.

The History Center will be transformed into a hybrid 2013/19th century location with the center’s spaces serving as battlefields, Ford’s Theatre, a Council of War room and more while using state-of-the-art media and education technology. Participants will explore all aspects of the war, from the politics and leaders to the civilian struggle and military life. Engaging and interactive lessons will include debates, mock elections, The Manual of Arms, 19th century games, chores and more.

Oh Wow! to host contest

Test your strategies at OH WOW! by playing the game card trek today from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The game was created by Dr. Stephen Sniderman, a former English professor at YSU. Make solar ovens

Children in grades kindergarten through eighth are invited to Oh Wow! on July 9 and 11 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. to build a functional solar oven. Participants will use their ovens to make s’mores. The cost is $2 for members and $10 for non-members.

Luau at the lily pond

The MetroParks will host a Luau at the Lily Pond today from 5:30-9 p.m. The Lily Pond is the oldest man-made body of water in Mill Creek Park. Join a summer celebration to help raise funds for the restoration of this beloved treasure. Enjoy luau-themed food, then dance to the steel drum sounds of the Calypso Gypsies. Come dressed festively tropical. Reservations are required by calling 330-702-3000. The cost is $50 per person, cash bar.

Dunkin’ to host happy hour

Dunkin’ Donuts in the Youngstown area will host a summer happy hour through the end of August. Richards named to dean’s list

Keith W. Richards, a graduate of Struthers High School, has been named to the dean’s list at the University of Northwestern Ohio in the College of Applied Technologies. Full-time students must receive a GPA of 3.5 or higher to be named to the dean’s list.

Resident named to dean’s list

Lidia Mowad has been named to the 2013 spring semester dean’s list at Ohio Wesleyan University. To qualify for dean’s list recognition, Ohio Wesleyan students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale in all applicable classes.

Area students named to dean’s list

Poland residents Nicole Chipps, Ronda Netto, Jessica Noble and Ashley Pluchinsky have been named to the dean’s list at Kent State Salem. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a 3.40 or greater grade point average and must have completed 12 or more credit hours for the semester.

Rovnak receives degree

Ryan Rovnak, a 2009 graduate of Poland Seminary High School, recently received his bachelors degree and has been offered a position as a graduate assistant coach for the baseball team at Mercyhurst North-East University. He will pursue his masters degree in business administration at Mercyhurst in the fall.

Randy Ryan, author of “My First Baseball Game,” will be signing books at Bradley’s Book Outlet in the Southern Park Mall June 29 from 3-6 p.m.

Writers group to meet in Canfield

Area writers are invited to attend Monday Night Writers June 24 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , located at 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. The meeting will be led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie. The two-hour sessions will include both writing exercises and discussions on the creative and business aspects of writing. Those with ‘works-in-progress’ are welcome to bring copies of their projects for comments and critiques from the group. The fee is $10 per class and registration is preferred. Join in the Celebrate Poland activities at the library on June 29 at 11 a.m. (indoor games) and 2 p.m. (outdoor games). For kids of all ages. Treats will be served.

Babies and books set at library

Babies ages 6 to 23 months can join the Poland library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader every Wednesday in June at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Shepherd of the Valley passed its annual state survey.

Assisted living providers offer services to residents who require some assistance, but do not need the level of care provided by a nursing home. The state licenses these providers, conducting at least one unannounced survey (inspection) during a nine to 15 month survey cycle to ensure the providers adhere to the standards set by the state.

Dollar General donates to library

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently announced the award of $3000 to Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County to support literacy programs. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 4.7 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.A complete list of grant recipients may be found online at www.dgliteracy.org.

Grow Youngstown to offer fresh produce

Grow Youngstown will offer fresh produce direct to the residents of Mahoning Valley through its Community Supported Agriculture market, which purchases food direct from local farmers. Participants can pick up their farm fresh goods on Tuesdays at the YMCA in Boardman, Fellows Riverside Gardens, East Side Public Library and Poland Public Library. Orders can also be delivered to your door for a fee.

Slavic festival today

Simply Slavic, the downtown festival created specifically to celebrate Greater Youngstown’s colorful Slavic community will take place today from noon to midnight on Federal Plaza East. The event began in 2011 to educate the community about Slavic heritage. The event will feature live music, folk dance performances, homemade food, educational exhibits and ethnic vendors.

Adult Career Center hosts informational sessions

Adults interested in enrolling in career certification programs offered at the Adult Career Center Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are invited to attend one of several free informational sessions at MCCTC, located at 7300 North Palmyra Road in Canfield. Informational sessions include career investigation as well as reading, math and language assessments. Attendees will tour the building, meet instructors and learn about financial aid opportunities. Mature drivers course at SOV

Shepherd of the Valley is inviting mature drivers, age 60 or better, to sign-up for the AAA Safe Driving for Mature Operators course. The state-certified course, which can qualify attendees for auto insurance discounts, is being offered Aug. 5 and 7 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., with an hour for lunch, at Shepherds of the Valley - Poland, located 301 W. Western Reserve Road. The cost is $10 for AAA members and $15 for non-members. Lunch is available for an additional cost.
