Boosters plan annual 5K

On June 22, the Canfield Cross Country Booster club is hosting the 10th annual Cardinal Classic Twilight 5K Race and 1.5 mile fun walk/run. Included is a free childrens (under 10) race. This year’s race is sponsored by Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. All events begin at the High School track with an entry fee of $15 in advance and $18 on the day of the race. Walk up registration and pre registered runner packet pick up will begin at 7 p.m. The childrens race will begin at 8:15 p.m., the 1.5 mile walk/fun run will begin at 8:25 p.m. and the 5K race will start at 8:45 p.m. Awardswill be given to the top three overall male and female in the fun run and 5K, as well as, age group awards in the 5K race. Free post race food will be available to all participants. There will also be approximately $500 worth of raffle items after the race. Canfield residents in 5K

Chase Kern of Canfield placed third in the IHM Festival 5K with a time of 16:31. Amanda Fire of Canfield took the womens race overall in 19:24. For complete results visit www.ihmfestival5K.webs.com.

Beck earns softball honors

Laura Beck, a 2012 graduate of Canfield High School, has continued her softball career at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa. As a freshman, she led the 2013 Golden Tornados offense with a team high batting average of .387 with 48 hits, 11 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 24 RBIs. Geneva completed the 2013 season with a conference record of 14-4 and qualified to participate in the NCAA PAC tournament. The team finished second with a 1-3 loss in the championship game to Thomas More College. Beck highlighted the first tournament game with a two run homer and four RBIs. As a result of her conference performance, she was selected to the PAC first team All-Conference and the PAC All-Tournament team. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association organization also voted her to the NFCA All-Central Region third team. Top honors for Beck occurred during the team’s post-season trip to Troutville, VA for the 2013 NCCAA Women’s Softball National Championship. She was selected to the national All-American second team and All-East first team. According to Geneva College head softball coach Van Zanic, Beck is the first freshman in school history to attain All-American honors.

Golf clinics offered

Diamondback Golf Course will host golf clinics for boys and girls in grades 3-8 June 25. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $50 per day or $120 up front for all three sessions. The clinics will feature guest instructors, Boo Timko, Ohio State and All Big Ten golfer. Checks can be made payable to Diamondback GC.

Benefit golf outing set

The Brett Wilcox benefit golf outing will be July 21 at Lakeside Golf Course. The shot gun start will begin at 9 a.m. The cost is $65 per golfer or $250 for a foursome and includes coffee and doughnuts at registration, lunch, dinner and drinks. Sponsorships are available for $100 for a hole sponsor or $350 for a gold sponsor.
