Second Harvest gets state funding to help feed needy

YOUNGSTOWN — Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley received $76,923 through the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives to distribute fresh fruits and vegetables and shelf-stable food products to hungry families in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

In May, Gov. John Kasich signed an executive order to provide $1 million in funds to be divided between Ohio’s food banks for the purpose of procuring and distributing food to hungry Ohio families, said Michael Iberis, food bank executive director.

Second Harvest’s 153 hunger-relief organizations provide emergency food assistance to 15,000 people each week.
