Going green at the rooftops of Lancaster
LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — Rooftops in Lancaster City are going green — literally.
An organization in Lancaster has converted more than 80,000 square feet of the city’s rooftops into grassy fields, WITF-FM reports. The idea is to capture rainfall on the green rooftops to prevent polluted water from flowing off of buildings and into the sewer system.
The greenery can absorb and retain up to 70 percent of the water caught on the roof and slow down up to 90 percent.
Slowing down the water is the key, according to Fritz Schroeder, who is the director of a Lancaster County Conservancy program called Live Green.
Schroeder says if the program delays pollutants from reaching the waterways, it will have made a difference.
