Bedford Trails junior program gets started

The Bedford Trails Junior Golf Program begins today with an orientation session beginning at 7:45 a.m. The program, for golfers between the ages of 8 and 17, continues every Wednesday — except July 3 — through July 31 when a Field Day will be held.

Poland star Balzano headed to Mount Union

Poland soccer star Carolyn Balzano has committed to attend the University of Mount Union and play on the women’s soccer team. She plans to study nursing at Mount Union.

Balzano, a midfielder/forward, was an All-Ohio, all-district, all-county and all-conference selection while being named defensive player of the year for the Bulldogs. She had eight goals and five assists this past season.

Gronkowski surgery on back ‘successful’

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski underwent back surgery on Tuesday, his fourth operation this year. The latest surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Watkins and was successful, said Drew Rosenhaus, Gronkowski’s agent.

Yanks’ Youkilis needs surgery, Teixeira to DL

Kevin Youkilis needs back surgery and Mark Teixeira returned to the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with inflammation in his right wrist, the latest injury setbacks for the depleted Yankees. And while the team hopes to have Teixeira back early next month, Youkilis will miss at least 10 to 12 weeks. The corner infielder has a herniated disk and is scheduled for surgery Thursday in California.

Jamaican sprinter suspended amid probe

KINGSTON, Jamaica

Veronica Campbell-Brown’s agent insists one of the cornerstones of Jamaica’s wide-ranging sprint success “is not a cheat,” even though the test results disagree. While her case is being decided, the three-time Olympic gold medalist will sit out.

Campbell-Brown, or “VCB” as she’s simply known in sprinting circles, tested positive for a banned diuretic at a meet in May and will serve a suspension while anti-doping officials rule on the positive drug test, island track officials announced Tuesday.

Altidore scores, US beats Honduras 1-0

SANDY, Utah

Jozy Altidore scored a goal in his fourth consecutive international match, enough for the United States to edge Honduras 1-0 in a World Cup qualifying game Tuesday night.

Before 20,250 fans at Rio Tinto Stadium, the Americans remained atop the six-team CONCACAF group. The United States (4-1-1) won three straight games this month, all since a 0-0 draw at Mexico gave it a boost.

Police visit home of Patriots’ Hernandez

N. ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass.

State and local police spent hours at the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on Tuesday night as another group of officers searched an industrial park about a mile away where a body was discovered the day before. Police at the scene and prosecutors would not comment on the actions while Sports Illustrated, citing an unidentified source, reported that Hernandez was not believed to be a suspect in what was being treated as a possible homicide.

Poland’s Mancini plays in National Amateur

The second round of qualifying for the Women’s Western Golf Association’s 113th National Amateur Championship was played Tuesday at Dayton Country Club. After completion the player with the lowest combined score of 138 was Brooke Mackenzie Henderson of Smith Falls, Ontario, Canada. Maria Mancini of Poland, who plays for Indiana University, is competing in the event. She is scheduled to face Emily tofaute of Louisville, Ky., in the round of 64 match-play.
