Utah church shooter charged with attempted murder
OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A Utah man accused of shooting his father-in-law during a Father’s Day Mass has been charged with attempted murder.
Court records show the Weber County attorney has filed charges against 35-year-old Charles “Ricky” Jennings Jr. He’s also charged with two counts each of attempted burglary and attempted robbery and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.
Police say Jennings fired one shot at the back of the head of 66-year-old James Evans during a Catholic Mass in Ogden Sunday. Jennings had walked into the church seconds earlier holding hands with his wife, the daughter of Evans.
Jennings fled the church, stole a truck from a neighbor and was later caught near a highway after the truck ran out of gas.
Evans is in critical condition but expected to survive.
