Prescribing food

Humility of Mary Health partners has developed a fruit and vegetable prescription program that is worth $20 at farmers’ markets at the St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown and the St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.

Bridget Lackey, community health educator, said the program is being piloted at the St. Elizabeth Ambulatory Care Center and Family Health Center and the St. Joseph Community Care Center. Doctors have prescriptions, in the form of vouchers, to give to patients they feel will benefit from the opportunity to add fresh fruits and vegetables to their families’ diets.

Lackey said vouchers are for use at the farmers’ markets in St. E’s private dining rooms or at the St. Joe’s location in downtown Warren’s Courthouse Square. The vouchers can only be used for fresh fruit, vegetables and plants for fruit and vegetables. Patients who get prescriptions also will receive a welcome packet that includes a vegetable brush and peeler, cutting board and apron.
