Johnson’s versatility helps US soccer team

SANDY, Utah

Nothing defines Fabian Johnson better than versatility. It is one reason why the German-American was such a coveted addition to the U.S. national soccer team in 2011. Johnson can shift between midfield and left back with ease.

Johnson’s versatility could be valuable once again when the United States takes on Honduras in a 2014 World Cup qualifying match tonight at the home of Real Salt Lake of MLS. Honduras is the only team to beat the Americans in their hexagonal group this year.

Johnson is expected to drop into the backfield from midfield to fill the hole left by DaMarcus Beasley who will be unavailable while serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation.

Former Oklahoma St QB Lunt joining Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.

Former Oklahoma State starting quarterback Wes Lunt is transferring to Illinois, returning to his home state after giving the Illini little consideration out of high school.

Lunt is from Rochester, Ill., and started five games last season as a freshman for the Cowboys but was sidelined by an injury. He was the first true freshman to open the season as the starting quarterback at Oklahoma State since at least 1950.

The highly regarded Lunt will have to sit out this fall under NCAA transfer rules, but when he’s available in 2014 could be an instant upgrade for a struggling Illinois program and coach Tim Beckman.

Ex-NFL star Johnson released from jail

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.

A contrite Chad Johnson apologized Monday for disrespecting a judge when the former NFL star slapped his attorney on the backside in court last week and was released from jail after only a week instead of 30 days.

Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh accepted Johnson’s apology and cut back his jail term for a probation violation to the seven days he had already served since the rear-swatting. Johnson said in court that he’d had time to think about why his flippant attitude was wrong — especially in a domestic violence case.
