The Mahoning Valley Office of the Autism Society of Ohio is accepting applications for its inaugural Summer Camp Scholarship Program. The Mahoning Valley Office will provide the $300 for financially disadvantaged families for the camp for children age 3 to 19, hosted by Autism Society of Greater Cleveland July 8-19 at the Independence Old Recreation Building.

Warren youth concert

The Warren City-Wide Youth Choir will have its Third Annual Summer Concert at 6 p.m. July 21 at the Warren Community Amphitheater downtown. The concert helps raise funds for a scholarship. The choir is seeking sponsorships from individuals and businesses to purchase ads in its souvenir booklet to raise funds for the scholarship. For information, visit www.agapeassembly.com.

‘What Matters to Metros?’ forum set

Mahoning Valley civic, community and business leaders are invited to attend a presentation and discussion about “What Matters to Metros” from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Davis Education and Visitor Center, Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek MetroParks.

Conducted by The Fund for Our Economic Future, the research looked at factors associated with economic growth in 115 mid-sized U.S. metropolitan areas in a post-recession economy.

“This research has specific implications for the Mahoning Valley. This is an opportunity to learn about what the findings tell us about the Youngstown/Warren area,” said Jeffrey Glebocki, president of The Raymond J. Wean Foundation, a co-sponsor of the event.

Alzheimer’s group seeks recruits to walk

BOARDMAN

A kickoff and team recruitment event for The Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Boardman Walk to End Alzheimer’s in October will be 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Los Gallos Restaurant, 685 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Those attending can register their teams for the walk, get new fundraising ideas, updates on this year’s walk as well as light refreshments and raffle drawings.

Also, if team members and potential team members wear the signature Alzheimer’s Association color of purple to the kick off, they will be eligible for a door prize.

Jess Briganti, 21 WFMJ-TV staff meteorologist and honorary chairwoman and mistress of ceremonies the day of the walk, will also be at the kickoff.

While there is no cost to attend the kickoff, those planning to participate are asked to RSVP to Helen Paes, development coordinator, at 330-533-3300 .

Pizza and patriotism in Howland on July 4

HOWLAND

Pizza Works will have a pizza-eating contest at noon July 4 at the Howland Fourth of July festivities at Howland High School, 200 Shaffer Drive.

The competition pits up to 48 contestants against one another in a battle to be the first to eat a 12-inch cheese pizza. The winner will be awarded $500. There is a $25 fee to compete. Register by visiting a Pizza Works restaurant.
