More than 90 percent of the patient population at Akron Children’s Boardman new pediatric Pulmonary Function Lab has asthma. Akron Children’s statistics:

In 2012, 1,093 patients were treated in the pulmonary clinic.

12 to 15 patients are seen each day.

Patients older than 5 with breathing issues have a pulmonary evaluation.

To date in 2013, nearly 500 patients have been treated, of whom roughly three to five a week are newly diagnosed with asthma or breathing related issues.

2010 United States asthma statistics:

Number of children with asthma, 7.1 million.

Number of visits to physician offices with asthma as the primary diagnosis, 14.2 million.

Number of visits to hospital outpatient departments with asthma as the primary diagnosis, 1.3 million.

Number of visits to emergency departments with asthma as the primary diagnosis, 1.8 million.
