Tuskegee Airmen exhibit planned for Pittsburgh airport

IMPERIAL, Pa. (AP) — Officials at Pittsburgh International Airport are planning to honor the Tuskegee Airmen with an exhibit to open in September.

Allegheny County Airport Authority officials and others say a corporate sponsorship drive has begun to raise about $40,000 for the exhibit.

Tuskegee Airmen were the U.S. military’s first black pilots during World War II. More members of the group — including 95 men and one woman — came from western Pennsylvania than any other area of the country.

The exhibit will feature plaques naming three Tuskegee Airmen killed in combat, and a television monitor will show highlights from a documentary, “Fly Boys: Western Pennsylvania’s Tuskegee Airmen” that was shown on Pittsburgh’s Public Broadcasting Service station, WQED-TV.

An opening ceremony is scheduled for the first week in September.
