1988: A lawyer for the Petro Stopping Center says he feels “betrayed” by Trumbull County commissioners who are opposing extension of a Youngstown sewer line to service the proposed truck stop in Weathersfield Township.

A taxpayer’s lawsuit is filed in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court seeking to set aside an April appointment to the Struthers Police Department, alleging irregularities in the testing and appointment process.

1973: The Youngstown State University Board of Trustees approves an increase of $20 a quarter for full-time students who are residents of Ohio, which brings the charge for a quarter to $210. Out-of-state students pay a $190 surcharge.

Dr. Edward L. McIver receives his doctor of medicine degree from Howard University, Washington, D.C., and will serve his internship with the Youngstown Hospital Association.

1963: Six young Youngs-town women driving home from a trip to Lake Erie to be home on Fathers Day are killed when their car is struck by a fast-moving train at the Geneva crossing. Dead are Sandra Ann Van Sack, Sylvia E. Sanker, Julaine Palko, Jennie Angelo, Darlene K. Muzenic and Barbara Cowan.

Robert R. Weller, 17, of Boardman is elected governor of the 26th Buckeye Boys State.

1938: Two bandits hold up Mike Acri, owner of a beer garden at 1341 Oak St., forcing him to turn over more than $1,500 he had hidden in his upstairs home.

Scores of Ohio’s best harness race horses are arriving in Canfield for the fourth annual Canfield Trots, a week-long meet at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
