Ten Penguins earn Horizon League honors

Ten Youngstown State student-athletes were recognized for their success both in competition and in the classroom as members of the 2013 Spring Academic All-Horizon League teams.
Of the 10 Penguin honorees, five earned academic all-league accolades for the second time.
Representing the baseball team, juniors Drew Dosch and Phil Lipari both earned academic all-conference honors for the second straight year.
Junior Marcus Heath joined them on the academic all-league team as YSU had the second-most selections in baseball.
Juniors Kendall Homan and Anna Pompeo were both repeat honorees in women’s track and field. Sophomore Brittany Stockmaster was a first-time selection.
DeBartolo Memorial Scholarship Dinner

The Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Scholarship Foundation Celebrity Dinner Auction will be held on June 23. The event will take place at the Stambaugh Auditorium at 5:30 p.m.
Some of the celebrities scheduled to appear are San Francisco 49ers GM, Trent Baalke; San Francisco 49ers coaches Tom Rathman and Jim Tomsula; and San Francisco 49ers players Vernon Davis, Phil Dawson, Mario Manningham, Donte Whitmer and Patrick Willis.

Clubs for Kids classic to benefit hospital

The Clubs for Kids Golf Classic to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will be held on August 2 at The Youngstown Country Club.
Registration and lunch will begin at 11 a.m. and the golf tournament will begin at noon.
Prior to the adult event, a youth clinic will be from 9 to 11 a.m.

Canfield High awards

At Canfield High School, several senior student-athletes were honored for their achievements.
The OHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award went to Michael Dohar (swimming) and Jennifer Love (cross country, soccer and track).
The OHSAA Courageous Student Award went to Paige Baker (soccer and basketball) while the OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award went to Connor Abraham (soccer) and Sara Martinko (tennis and track).
Also, the OHSAA Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award went to Sabrina Mangapora (volleyball and basketball).
Valley athletes vie at Midwest Meet
FORT WAYNE, Ind.
Five area track and field seniors will compete for Team Ohio in today’s annual Midwest Meet of Champions at Northrop High School.
Salem teammates Anthony Shivers (discus) and Zack Wukotich (high jump) will join Maplewood’s Wyatt Hartman (800-meter run), South Range’s Tim Nichols (3200) and Canfield’s Emma Lunne (1600) in competing against top seniors from Michigan and Indiana.

Italian-American HOF awards 10 scholarships

The Mahoning Valley Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame recently awarded scholarships to 10 area seniors at its annual banquet.
Recipients are Frankie Saban (Niles, football), Grazia Accordino (McDonald, cheerleader), Gina Marie Sylvester (Warren JFK, track and field, soccer), Alyssa Titi (Canfield, softball); Elexea Aurilio (Niles, volleyball), Austin Bergana (Niles, basketball, soccer, track), Angelene Christine Coates (JFK, cheerleading, basketball, volleyball, track) and Stephen Macall (JFK, golf).
The organization also honored Lou Furano as its man of the year. Furano, who graduated from Warren St. Mary’s and YSU, was actively involved in youth baseball.
