City investigates rash of car fires close together

Staff report

WARREN

City officials promised to give special attention to a Southeast neighborhood that has had three automobile arsons on two mornings one month apart.

Residents of the neighborhood and the larger Kenmore Neighborhood Association complained to Warren City Council on Wednesday about the problem.

Warren Fire Chief Ken Nussle said it appears that one person is responsible for fires May 10 at 1046 Kenmore Ave. SE and nearby 1117 Rogers Ave. SE as well as a Monday-morning car fire at another Kenmore Avenue residence near the two other fires.

The neighborhood is just north of Youngstown Road.

The fires all started inside the cars, and each was intentionally set. Each fire started at around 4 a.m. Some of the fires spread to other vehicles, according to the fire department.

Nussle said the randomness of the fires has left residents of the neighborhood on high alert and worried.

His investigators have not uncovered any explanation for the fires, such as someone trying to get revenge on someone, making them random and more difficult to solve, the chief said.
