Students, staff and family went to Woodside Elementary School May 9 to celebrate memories and fun at the closing celebration. The halls and classrooms were open to any who wished to visit them and reminisce about the time they had spent there.

“Mr. Rice planned the celebration,” said PTA president Laurie Schaffer. “People throughout the community used this as an opportunity to come back to the school and take a peek before they tear the school down. It’s sad to see the building go, but we are very excited to see the new school.”

The PTA provided refreshments and had commemorative ornaments for sale, while families wandered the school and waited for Rice’s third-grade choir to perform. As they walked, they shared stories of their memories in the building.

“My grandson goes here and I have been involved in the PTA for the last two years,” said Phyllis Means. “My children had Mr. Rice as a teacher at Watson Elementary School and participated in the talent shows. It has been neat to have my grandson here with him for his last year.”

Rice shared his own feelings on the celebration.

“The children are what I will miss most,” said Rice. “What a loving community this has been. I hope that the parents and grandparents that went to school here will leave today with good memories of being here for the last time.”
