CVMS students equate spring with math

Canfield Village Middle School math students found numerous successes in several competitions in which they competed throughout the spring months.
“When many students think about school activities in the spring, they usually think of outdoor activities like baseball and track, or spring plays and musical concerts, the not-so-fun OAA tests, or maybe they just get excited for the end of the school year. However, at CVMS, a growing number of students think about math! That’s right, math,” said Dominique Tozzi, CVMS gifted mathematics teacher.
Throughout the year, many students look forward to the various math competitions that occur; the first of which is MathCounts. Team members included, Sam Hepola, Max Lee, Bobby Long, Caroline Griswold, Anna Cincinnao, Harmeet Kaur, Sam Accordino, Anthony Joseph, Alex Petrallo, Jon Gant, Kyle Huston, Beverly Sipp and Taylor Mead. The team is coached by Shelly Dwyer, eighth-grade math teacher.
Eighth-grade students Max Lee and Bobby Long finished third and ninth, respectively, in the local competition at Youngstown State University, earning both of them a spot in the state tournament.
“As excited as we were for our MathCounts participants, we were equally as excited about our T.A.P.S. (Team Approach to Problem Solving) competitors. There were 30 teams from grades seven and eight representing CVMS, and the questions proved to be quite challenging,” said Tozzi.
The seventh-grade team of Robyn Bores, Emma Kadilak, Daria Sansoterra, and Maranda Solomon, who named themselves “The Radicals,” met this challenging year, their first in the competition, head on and tied for second place overall.
Twenty-one fifth- and sixth-grade students, the highest number in recent years, competed in the Eastern Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics math competition at Austintown Fitch High School April 27. The students brought home several awards.
Participants included sixth-grade students Evan Skripac, Jake Donadee, Isabella Audia, Nicole El Hayek, Jessica Lee, Hannah Keffler, Victoria Messuri, Julia Petrallo and Rachel Beil.
Donadee earned the first place trophy in the Geometry Category, while Petrallo earned the third place title for Calculator Problems.
The fifth-grade team included, Andrew Marenkovic, Joe Scolieri, Sanjana Nallapaneni, Aiden Orlovsky, Holly Eberly, Sydney Kinkade, Ben Weiss, Benjamin Martin, Arvind Subramanyam, Nick Goodrich, Zach Russo and Zach Perrico.
Bringing home third place titles were Russo in Numbers and Number Relations, Scolieri in Calculator Problems and Marenkovic in Mental Arithmetic, while Sydney Kinkade brought home the first place trophy for Calculator Problems.
“So while spring may mean a lot of different things to different people, some students will always equate spring with the opportunity to participate in challenging math competitions,” said Tozzi.
