Police find suspected marijuana on man

Police say they found 23 bags of suspected marijuana packaged for sale on a man late Saturday evening after a short foot chase on the South Side.
Derrick C. Williams, 22, is expected to face charges of trafficking in drugs marijuana and walking in roadways when he is arraigned in Municipal Court this afternoon after he was arrested behind an East Ravenwood Avenue garage about 11:25 p.m. Saturday.
Reports said officers spotted two men walking in the middle of the 200 block of Hilton Avenue, and when they tried to talk to them, the men ran away in opposite directions.
The other man got away, but officers managed to find Williams hiding between the fence and garage. He was taken to Mahoning County jail.
Mahoning OVI reports three arrests made

The Mahoning County Operating A Vehicle while Under the Influence Task Force reported they made three arrests at a checkpoint this weekend in the county.
Eight officers on the task force made 47 traffic stops between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. Friday and, in addition to the three arrests for OVI, also arrested a person on a felony-weapons charge.
The task force also issued 11 citations for various traffic violations, issued a summons to three people and arrested a person on a failure to appear warrant.
The task force did not say where the county checkpoint was set up.

Vukovich to serve as visiting judge

Judge Joseph J. Vukovich of the Youngstown-based 7th District Court of Appeals will serve as a visiting judge on the Ohio Supreme Court to hear oral arguments today in State v. Wesson, a Summit County death-sentence case, from which Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor has removed herself.
The case concerns Hersie Wesson of Akron, who is appealing his conviction and sentence for aggravated murder in the February 2008 stabbing death of 81-year-old Emil Varhola and the attempted murder of Varhola’s wife, Mary, during a robbery in the couple’s Akron home.

Palmy Chapter No. 114 Order of the Eastern Star celebrates Flag Day with a soup-and-salad event 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Deerfield Masonic Hall, 2380 state Route 225.
Cost is $6 and will include a variety of homemade soups, tossed salad, dessert and beverages. Takeout orders also will be available. Proceeds will benefit the chapter’s philanthropic efforts.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will close its offices nationwide Friday as a result of government-wide automatic spending cuts that took effect on March 1. HUD will resume normal operation Monday.
Two accidents occur after power outage

Police said a power outage at about 3:20 p.m. Monday, that lasted about 15-20 minutes, contributed to two vehicle accidents when traffic signals failed to work.
The accidents occurred at Market and North streets and Main and South streets, police said. Driver were cited with failure to yield. No other information was available at press time.
