Poland’s Gardner third in local USTA qualifier
Garrett Gardner of Poland, who reached the Ohio Division II state tennis tournament this spring as a junior, has qualified for the USTA Boys 18s Midwest Outdoor Junior Championships scheduled June 22-27 in Indianapolis.
Gardner finished third last weekend in a qualifier at Boardman High School. He won his first two matches, lost in the semifinal round and then won the third-place match.
Local racers among winners at Deerfield
Angie Grzelak of Hubbard and Terry Ohl of Mineral Ridge were among the division winners in racing Saturday at Deerfield Raceway. Grzelak won the Chargers division weekly race and Ohl won in the Classics division.
Other division winners were Kenny Meadows of Deerfield in the Mod Lites; Bryan Grove of Beach City in the 600 Micros; Wesley Leibert of Beaver Falls, Pa., in the Micro Sprints; Dan Rummes of Somerdale in the E-Mods; Jason Shaw of Canton in the Compacts; Danielle Tuttle of Garrettsville in the Junior Sprints; and Brian Toto of Kinsman in the Junior Sportsman.
Warren, Canfield youth golfers do well at event
Two Warren golfers and a pair from Canfield led area youths at a Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf event Friday at Big Met Golf Course in Fairview Park.
Donovan Ray of Warren shot 37 and was tied for second, just one stroke behind the winner, in the Boys 13-15 division. Angelica Maggio, also of Warren, shot 86 to finish third in the Girls 16-19 division. She was seven strokes off the winner’s pace.
Canfield’s Michele Whiteleather was fourth in Girls 16-19 with a 92 and Olivia DeMartino (101) of Canfield was tied for eighth.
Among other area golfers, Nicklaus Altomare of Leetonia was tied for fifth with a 78 in the boys 16-19 Division, and Brian Velasquez of Poland finished tied for 23rd in the same division with an 87.
Infielder McDonald returns to Cleveland
The Cleveland Indians have acquired infielder John McDonald from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named or cash considerations. McDonald was sent to the Indians on Monday after the Pirates recalled him from a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis and activated him from the 15-day disabled list.
The 38-year-old McDonald spent his first six seasons with Cleveland starting in 1999. He has also played for Detroit, Toronto and Arizona. The Indians made room for McDonald by moving right-hander Brett Myers to the 60-day disabled list.
Bengals’ Jones arrested after incident last week
CINCINNATI
Court documents show Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones has been arrested and jailed on an assault charge. A police complaint says Jones is accused of striking a Cincinnati woman shortly before midnight June 5. The police report lists the injury as apparently minor.
Jones was arrested Monday. A message left for his agent hasn’t been returned. Court documents show Jones was released on his own recognizance with his arraignment on the misdemeanor charge scheduled for Tuesday.
Pistons hire Cheeks; Hollins, Griz part ways
Maurice Cheeks is getting a third shot to be an NBA head coach. The Detroit Pistons are desperately hoping he makes the most of the opportunity he was given Monday.
Cheeks was 284-286 in the regular season and 5-11 during three postseasons while leading the Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers. Cheeks becomes the franchise’s fourth coach in six seasons.
Also, the Memphis Grizzlies have decided to part with the winningest coach in the franchise’s history, telling Lionel Hollins they will not be renewing his contract as head coach coming off their first trip to the Western Conference finals.
Hollins confirmed Monday night to The Associated Press that he had been told his contract would not be renewed.
