Extra week needed to finish $293M Cleveland bridge project

CLEVELAND (AP) — Crews building a $293 million highway bridge in Cleveland have an extra week to finish, pushing the completion date closer to the likely first snowfall of the season.

The Ohio Department of Transportation has pushed back to Nov. 4 the deadline for completing the first of two bridges to replace the aging Interstate 90 bridge into downtown Cleveland.

The extra week apparently is due to time lost to bad weather last winter.

The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reports the bridge must be ready for traffic by the new deadline or contractors could face fines of $12,000 a day.

When the bridge is complete, work will begin on the second span.
