Slovak ladies grant 23 scholarships locally

The Youngstown District of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association will receive 23 scholarships totaling $28,000, the national headquarters has announced.

Bernadette Demechko, district president, announced that the winners will be honored at a banquet Aug. 25 at The Elm Tree Catering Center in Struthers. Dr. Mary Lou DiPillo, president, and members of Branch 30 will host the event.

The headquarters announced 225 winners of $250,000 in scholarships granted to members in 15 districts nationwide.

Local winners on the graduate level of $1,750 each are Jenna Hallapy of Boardman and Sean Petiya of Youngstown.

The college level winners with scholarships of $1,250 each are Nick Markovitch and Jacob Zaluski of Canfield, Derek Bodo of Mineral Ridge, Jenna Lee Wise of Hubbard and Jessica Yuricek of Poland.

Catholic high school scholarship winners of $1,000 each are Scott Allen Clarke of Boardman and Jacob Sebest of Campbell.

Catholic elementary school scholarship winners of $750 each are Mya Agee of New Springfield, Brooke Chandler of New Middletown and Vincent Pezzuto of Youngstown.

The Katherine L. Sedlacko Family Trust Scholarship of $500 each was awarded to Sebest and Chandler.

The 442 FCSLA branches nationwide have been asked to send donations to headquarters, and the amount will be matched and distributed to members in Texas and Oklahoma to help with expenses from damage caused by the chemical plant explosion in Texas and tornadoes in those states.
