Chaney grad promoted, receives Purple Heart

Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Raymond Telego Jr., a 1987 graduate of Chaney High School, was promoted to his current rank while stationed in Hohenfels, Germany, with the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd BDE Combat Team, 7th Infantry.

Telego, the son of Raymond and Margie Telego Sr. of Howland, also received a Purple Heart for wounds suffered Nov. 25, 2006, in Iraq. He has served two tours in Iraq, one in Afghanistan, and two in Korea during his career. He is expected to return to the United States this month and be stationed at Fort Drum, N.Y.

He and his wife, Melanie, have a daughter, Chandler, and two sons, Blake and Devin.

Flag Day event Friday

CANFIELD

The Mahoning Veterans Memorial and AMVETS Post 44 are conducting a Flag Day ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Memorial located on the west side of the Canfield Fairgrounds. The public is welcome to attend and participate in the ceremony.

Beautifying VA hospital

FAIRLAWN

Keep Ohio Beautiful has been awarded a $75,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation for KOB’s Ohio Valley Region VA Hospital Community Beautification and Greening Project.

In partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and Team Depot, KOB will revitalize outdoor green spaces at two Veterans Affairs Hospitals in the Ohio Valley Region: The Columbus VA Medical Center and VA Butler, Pa., Healthcare.

Camp Ravenna project

WASHINGTON

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-13th, a member of the Defense Subcommittee on Appropriations, has voted in support of the 2014 Military Construction/ Veterans Affairs bill, which provides $5.2 million for a sewer project at Camp Ravenna Joint Military Training Center.

The Ohio National Guard has a long-term plan to develop Camp Ravenna as a major training site. Guard units from across Ohio, as well as military units from other states, will increasingly train at Camp Ravenna. With more than 21,000 acres, the camp provides the capacity to train up to a brigade-sized element of 3,000 soldiers.

Radar Veterans to meet

NORTH CANTON

The Radar Veterans of Northeastern Ohio luncheon meeting is at 2 p.m. Thursday at the 356th Fighter Group Restaurant, 4919 Mount Pleasant Road, North Canton. The meeting is open to any Radar veteran and spouse.

Base gets new aircraft

MANSFIELD

The first two of eight C-130H Hercules cargo aircraft scheduled for the 179th Airlift Wing arrived late in May. The planes were transferred from an Alaska Air National Guard base.

Under aviation force structure changes contained in the Fiscal Year 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, the four C-27J Spartan aircraft currently at the 179th will be divested, while eight C-130H Hercules aircraft will be fielded there.

The new airlift mission with eight C-130H’s will add about 200 jobs at the 179th. The wing is scheduled to receive the final aircraft by June 2016.
