The Youngstown State Penguin Club will hold the annual Debra L. Hinkle Football Scholarship Bocce Social on July 21, at Cassese’s MVR.
The tournament is open to everyone. The deadline for registration is July 12.

Umpires in action
Three members of the Youngstown Metro Umpires Association were selected to work the 2013 OHSAA state softball tournament.
They are Anthony Montana, Pat Montana and Rob Luklan.
Phantoms selected
CHICAGO
The Youngstown Phantoms have been selected to take part in the inaugural USHL Atlantic Challenge.
The preseason event, which will be held Sept. 6-8 in New York and New Jersey, will be the largest exhibition of USHL talent outside the League’s Midwest base in its 11-year history as USA Hockey’s only Tier 1 junior league.
The USHL Atlantic Challenge will be hosted by a trio of youth and junior hockey organizations on the East Coast.
In addition to the preseason games played by USHL teams, the event will feature an invitational tournament for some of the region’s top junior teams.
Longtime Miami (Ohio) coach Coles dies
CINCINNATI
Longtime Miami (Ohio) basketball coach Charlie Coles, the school’s all-time leader in victories, died Friday in Oxford, Ohio, the school said. He was 71.
No cause of death was reported immediately, but Coles had a long history of heart issues.
Known for his colorful wit and a coaching competitiveness as the mid-major RedHawks often scheduled national powers for their nonconference games, the two-time Mid-American Conference coach of the year had 263 victories at Miami.
He also was the Mid-American Conference’s all-time leader in conference wins with 218.
Gun found when UNC player arrested
DURHAM, N.C.
Officers seized a 9mm handgun and ammunition when North Carolina’s leading scorer, P.J. Hairston, was arrested on a marijuana possession charge, according to a police report released Friday.
Durham police stopped Hairston Wednesday for a routine license check during which he was arrested.
Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael says the pistol was found on the ground outside the rented 2013 GMC Yukon during the search.
Also seized were three cigars and two plastic baggies containing more than 11/2 ounces of marijuana.
NBA Finals’ Game 1 TV viewership declines
NEW YORK
The NBA Finals’ television viewership for Game 1 was down 12 percent from last year.
The San Antonio Spurs’ win over the Heat on Thursday night on ABC was watched by 14.2 million people.
That’s down from Miami’s appearances the previous two seasons, 16.2 million against Oklahoma City in 2012 and 15.2 against Dallas in 2011, but higher than the six years before that.
Voeckler wins 6th stage of Dauphine bike race
GRENOBLE, France
Thomas Voeckler won the sixth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine cycling race on Friday, and Chris Froome kept the leader’s yellow jersey with two stages left.
Voeckler attacked near the end and held off three other riders in a finish to secure his first stage win of the season and the first of his career at the Dauphine.
The Frenchman clocked a time of 3 hours, 24 minutes, 13 seconds on the 88-mile trek from La Lechere to Grenoble. Spaniard Jose Lopez finished second ahead of Belgium’s Kevin Seeldrayers and Russia’s Egor Silin.
