SALEM

The Children’s Department at Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., is gearing up for its annual Summer Reading Program, Dig Into Reading, and invites all children from preschool to sixth grade to join.

Children will earn prizes every few hours in an attempt to read for 20 hours between today and August 8. At the end of the program, the library will sponsor an animal at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, and program participants will help choose the animal.

Kids can participate in many programs this summer. For the youngest pre-readers, there will be storytimes every week through the nine-week summer session. The sessions are for the early literacy needs of toddlers and preschoolers.

Storytimes are geared to specific ages, but most of the summer programs are open to all ages, and the library encourages whole families to attend such programs as:

Mad Science: 11 a.m. today (registration required), free and open to families with children under 12, in the gymnasium at St. Paul School.

Mr. Zap’s Balloon Animal Show: 11 a.m. Aug. 8 (registration required).

Storyteller’s Series: presented by friends from around Columbiana County, 11 a.m. every Thursday from Thursday through Aug. 1.

Pete the Cat Party: 6:30 p.m. June 17, for preK-third graders (registration required), at the library.

During the Summer Reading Program, there will be a drop-in craft program called Crafty Kids from 10 a.m. to noon Monday mornings, weekly contests and prize drawings, a Pyramid Party and a Fairy House Building program.
