EGCC program receives continuing accreditation

The Medical Assisting Program at Eastern Gateway Community College was awarded continuing accreditation through 2022 by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

The recent peer review conducted by the Medical Assisting Education Review Board and CAAHEP’s board of directors recognizes the program’s substantial compliance with the nationally established accreditation standards.

The next comprehensive evaluation of the program, including an on-site review, is scheduled to occur no later than 2022.

The program is offered on the Jefferson County Campus in Steubenville and at the Valley Center in Youngstown. Enrollment for the program, which includes certificate and associate degree options, is open at both locations. The medical assistant performs a variety of administrative duties dependent upon the physician’s practice and unique office requirements. The duties may include acting as a secretary, bookkeeper and receptionist; answering incoming calls; receiving mail; greeting patients; handling correspondence and filing; arranging for laboratory and X-ray procedures or hospital admissions; taking histories; and maintaining patient records, accounts and billing.

The medical assistant’s clinical duties include preparing patients and assisting the physician with examinations or treatment; measuring height and weight; and taking vital signs.
