Meeting will feature legacy of Daniel Hise

SALEM

The membership meeting of the Salem Historical Society will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Dale Shaffer Research Library, 239 S. Lundy Ave.

It will feature Judi Allio and George W.S. Hays in a powerpoint presentation on the legacy of Daniel Howell Hise, who kept a 32-year daily diary during the 1800s.

Hise was an avid abolitionist who put his life on the line by opening his Salem home to fugitive slaves on their flight to freedom.

Copies of the Hise Journal are available on microfilm, book form, CD and DVD in the society’s gift shop.

The meeting is open to the public. A short business meeting will precede the presentation. Greeter will be Alice Deatherage. Refreshments will be provided by Lou Raymond and Kathy Hale.

For information call the society at 330-337-8514.
