Free health seminar to be June 19

Dr. Noah Erickson, Chiropractic Physician, will be hosting a free seminar titled “Natural Healthcare Solutions for Kids,” focusing on diet, nutrition, allergy free cooking and essential oils, on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. at 8261 Market St. in Boardman, next to Bloomin’ Crazy plaza. Torch club hosts dinner meeting

The Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs’ dinner-discussion meeting will be June 17, at Pete’s Place, Kilcawley Center, on the campus of Youngstown State University. The speaker will be Dr. Thomas Copeland. The title of his speech is “John McCormack: The Tenor Whom Caruso Acknowledged as His Equal.” The public is invited to attend. Dr. Suzelis to host seminar

Book store to host signing

Writers group to meet in Canfield

Area writers are invited to attend Monday Night Writers June 24 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , located at 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. The meeting will be led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie. The two-hour sessions will include both writing exercises and discussions on the creative and business aspects of writing. Those with ‘works-in-progress’ are welcome to bring copies of their projects for comments and critiques from the group. The fee is $10 per class and registration is preferred. Local student named to dean’s list

Brandi Reece of Boardman was named to the dean’s list for both fast and spring semesters of the school year at Kent State University. Reece just completed her freshman year and was accepted into the nursing program there.

Perry named to dean’s list

Stephen Andrew Perry of Boardman has been named to the dean’s list at Clemson University for the spring 2013 semester. Perry is majoring in parks, recreation and tourism management (professional golf management). To be named to the dean’s list, a student achieved a grade-point average between 3.50 and 3.99 on a 4.0 scale.

Stanko earns honors

Rachel Stanko of Boardman was named to the honor’s list at Mercy College of Ohio. She is a junior associate of science nursing major. To be named on the honor’s list, a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.3 or higher and be enrolled for six to 11 credit hours.

Padgitt named to dean’s list

Elizabeth Padgitt of Boardman was named to the dean’s list at Mercy College of Ohio. She is a sophomore associate of science nursing major. To be named on the dean’s list, a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.3 or higher and be enrolled for 12 or more credit hours per semester.

Friends of the library picnic set

The Boardman Friends of the Library summer picnic will be June 10 at 10 a.m. The picnic is for members only and reservations are required.

Bring your eReader to the Boardman library during the month of June and the librarians will show you how to download books from the library’s Digital Catalog on the library website. Space is limited. Meet Arthur’s sister, the real D.W.

Meet Kim, the sister of Marc Brown, author of the “Arthur” series of books on June 28 at 2 p.m. at the Boardman library. Kim is the inspiration for D.W. in Brown’s “Arthur” books will share childhood memories of her famous brother, talk about how Marc writes and illustrates his stories, and show how to draw Arthur in 8 easy steps. Family story time set

Join the Boardman library for family story time every Wednesday in June at 10 a.m. The program will include stories and fun for children of all ages. Parents are invites to join their children for this 30-minute program

Make gifts for dad

Sensory story time set

Join the Boardman library for a family story time for children of all ages with a sensory focus on June 15 at 2 p.m. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. The program will offer books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals. Children must attend with an adult. Registration is required. Give blood at the library

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive at the Boardman library on June 17 from 1 to 6 p.m.

Babies and books set at library

Babies ages 6 to 23 months can join the Boardman library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader on June 14 and 28 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

SOV hosts summer concert series

Shepherd of the Valley- Boardman will host three concerts this summer. The concerts will be June 18 - The Steve Fazzini Band, July 18 - The Calypso Gypsies Trio and Aug. 20 - The Jim Frank Trio. All concerts are free and open to the public. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will move indoors. YSU searches for majorettes, feature twirlers

The YSU marching band will have auditions for majorette and feature twirler positions for the upcoming marching band 2013 season on June 14 from 5-7 p.m. (learn routine) and June 15 from 9-11:30 a.m. (audition) Incoming freshmen and current students are encouraged to audition for the 2013 season. Participants should plan on two days for the full audition process. Both sessions will be in Stambaugh Stadium’s Gym A.

Benefit for local child

St. Charles Church, located at 7345 Westview Dr. in Boardman, will host a spaghetti dinner benefit tomorrow from 1-5 p.m. for Poland resident Jackson Diaz, who was diagnosed with Apert Syndrome shortly after his birth last June. Tickets will be $4 for children 3-12 years old and $8 for adults age 12 and older. There will be a 50/50 raffle, basket raffles, and a bake sale. Mahoning Riverfest set

Friends of the Mahoning River will have its second annual Mahoning Riverfest today from noon to 4 p.m. at the B & O Station, located ar 530 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. The Riverfest will begin with a dock ribbon cutting ceremony. Kayak and canoe rides will be available courtesy of Trumbull Canoe Trails.

There will be an art festival inside the B & O from noon to 7 p.m. The cost is $1. The event will also include educational and historical presentations and displays with a focus on the river and the environment. There is no charge for parking.

Dollar General donates to library

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently announced the award of $3000 to Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County to support literacy programs. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 4.7 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.A complete list of grant recipients may be found online at www.dgliteracy.org.

Slavic festival to be June 15

Simply Slavic, the downtown festival created specifically to celebrate Greater Youngstown’s colorful Slavic community will take place on June 15 from noon to midnight on Federal Plaza East. The event began in 2011 to educate the community about Slavic heritage. The event will feature live music, folk dance performances, homemade food, educational exhibits and ethnic vendors.

Lions give trees

In the article “Lions club plants seeds at Robinwood Lane,” there was a misprint. The Lions club gave trees to the students at Robinwood Lane to plant for Arbor Day.

Adult Career Center hosts informational sessions

Adults interested in enrolling career certification programs this fall offered at the Adult Career Center Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are invited to attend one of several free informational sessions this spring and summer at MCCTC, located at 7300 North Palmyra Road in Canfield. Informational sessions include career investigation as well as reading, math and language assessments. Attendees will tour the building, meet instructors and learn about financial aid opportunities. Upcoming informational sessions will be June 18 at 6 p.m. and July 9 at 6 p.m.
