Board meeting

Youngstown Board of Education meets at 5 p.m. today in the board room at the Irene L. Ward Building, 20 W. Wood St., regarding Superintendent Connie Hathorn’s retire/rehire request that will be voted on June 25.
Hathorn was hired as deputy superintendent in October 2010 and became superintendent in January 2011, replacing Wendy Webb, who retired. His contract, under which he earns about $132,000 annually, expires July 31, 2014.
Hathorn is seeking to retire and be rehired after changes to the State Teacher Retirement System that include a provision that if members retire after July 1, they have to wait five years before receiving a 2 percent cost-of-living adjustment annually.
By retiring, Hathorn would be able to draw on his retirement and collect whatever the newly negotiated salary is. If members retire before July 1, they won’t receive a cost-of-living adjustment for one year, but will receive the 2-percent adjustments after that.
Dead bear found
liberty
A dead black bear was found in the township Monday in front of a vacant house on Tanglewood Drive. Tanglewood Drive is just off Loganway Avenue between Interstate 80 and Church Hill-Hubbard Road.
At this point, it has not been determined how the bear died, police Chief Richard Tisone said. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will take possession of the bear. It will be removed and most likely a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, Tisone said.
