Joe Bornemiss has been hired as the Mathews High School girls varsity basketball coach.
Bornemiss was the former Jackson-Milton boys varsity basketball coach where he led Jackson-Milton to its first winning season in over a decade.
Matt Pitzulo plays at Bowling Green Univ.

Matt Pitzulo, a graduate of Poland High School, competed with the Bowling Green Univ. baseball team at the Louisville Regionals.
Pitzulo was a four-year DH at Bowling Green.
His homer on May 18 gave the Falcons the MAC title.

US soccer beats Germany in exhibition

Clint Dempsey scored twice in a five-minute span of the second half and moved into second place on the U.S. career scoring list, helping the Americans edge a second-string Germany team 4-3 in an exhibition game Sunday.
Preparing for three World Cup qualifiers in a 12-day span beginning Friday, U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann watched the Americans take a 4-1 lead and hang on to beat the team he helped win the 1990 World Cup as a player and coached to the 2006 semifinals.
The game commemorating the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Soccer Federation.
California wins rugby championship game
CHESTER, Pa.
Danny Barrett led California to the Collegiate Rugby Championship title, scoring twice in the first half in a 19-14 victory over Life University on Sunday.
In a rematch of last year’s bronze-medal game won by Cal, Life appeared tired after beating Navy 43-7 in a semifinal that ended an hour before the championship game.
California beat eighth-seeded Arizona 26-12 in the quarterfinals, and edged UCLA 33-21 in the semifinals.
Life opened with a 31-17 victory over Kutztown in the quarterfinals.
Canada’s Veilleux wins Dauphine Libere stage
CHAMPERY, Switzerland
David Veilleux of Canada won the first stage of the Dauphine Libere cycling race by nearly two minutes Sunday.
Gianni Meersman of Belgium was the runner-up, finishing just ahead of the main pack.
Veilleux won the 75-mile ride around the Swiss Alpine village of Champery in 3 hours, 17 minutes, 35 seconds. Meersman was 1:56 back. Veilleux formed part of an early breakaway along with France’s Jean-Marc Bideau and Thomas Damuseau and Spain’s Ricardo Garcia Ambroa.
Morgan’s 2 goals lead US women over Canada
TORONTO
Alex Morgan scored twice and Sydney Leroux added a goal to lead the United States over Canada 3-0 Sunday in their first soccer meeting since the Americans’ 4-3 overtime win in the semifinals of last year’s Olympic women’s soccer tournament.
Morgan scored for the top-ranked Americans in the 70th minute when she cut inside defender Emily Zurrer and from the top of the penalty area slotted past goalkeeper Erin McLeod. Morgan scored from the same spot two minutes later, her 44th international goal.
Last August, Morgan’s goal in the third and final minute of stoppage time in overtime sent the Americans to the gold-medal game, where the U.S. defeated Japan for its third straight gold medal.
