Pittsburgh police say an offensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers was stabbed twice during an attempted carjacking on the city’s South Side district.
Police said 23-year-old Michael Adams told officers he was standing near his truck shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday when he was confronted by three men, one armed with a knife and one armed with a handgun.
Adams told police the trio tried to carjack him, but he didn’t have his car keys. He said “the situation escalated” and one man pointed the gun at his face while the other stabbed him twice before all three fled, according to police.
Adams went into a nearby restaurant to seek help and was later taken to UPMC Mercy, where he had surgery for stab wounds to the abdomen and left forearm. Police said he is currently in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
Adams tweeted: “I had an angel lookin out for me! I’ll be ok just gotta fight to get back harder then ever.”
He was drafted in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft and named the team’s outstanding rookie, starting six of the 10 games in which he played.
Police said they were looking for suspects.
49ers hire Mangini
SAN FRANCISCO
The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with Eric Mangini to be an offensive consultant for the NFC champions.
The former Cleveland Browns and New York Jets coach will work on Jim Harbaugh’s staff for the two-time reigning NFC West winners, who lost 34-31 in the Super Bowl to the Baltimore Ravens after missing scoring chances in the waning moments.
The 42-year-old Mangini had been working as an analyst with ESPN since August 2011, after being fired by the Browns in January that year. He went 10-22 in two years for Cleveland after three seasons in New York.
Falcons’ Robiskie promoted
ATLANTA
Atlanta Falcons wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie has been promoted to assistant head coach.
Coach Mike Smith says Robiskie, entering his sixth season with the team’s receivers, has played a key role in Atlanta’s five straight winning seasons.
Falcons receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones combined for 2,549 yards receiving with 171 catches and 17 touchdowns in 2012. Jones earned his first Pro Bowl selection — the fifth straight year one of Robiskie’s receivers has earned the honor.
Robiskie served as interim head coach with Cleveland in 2004 and Washington in 2000.
