Rovnak takes graduate assistant position

Ryan Rovnak, a graduate of Poland High School, will be a graduate assistant at Mercyhurst.

Rovnak graduated from Ohio Dominican where he was an all-GLIAC selection in baseball.

Higuan’s PK rallies Crew to 1-1 draw

Federico Higuain’s penalty kick in the 69th minute rallied the Columbus Crew to a 1-1 tie against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday night.

Making his first start, rookie defender Chad Barson drew a foul by Andrew Driver with a cutback on the right side of the box.

Higuain ended a 294-minute home scoreless drought for the Crew (4-4-5), converting his third penalty in four tries this season. He has four goals.

Houston (6-4-4) took the lead in the 31st minute on Warren Creavalle’s third goal of the season.

Creavalle ran into unmarked space as defender Kofi Sarkodie dribbled to the right corner.

Philadelphia in 1-1 tie

TORONTO

Jack McInerney scored in second-half stoppage time to lift the Philadelphia Union to a 1-1 soccer draw against short-handed Toronto FC on Saturday.

McInerney score on a low shot through traffic after some extended pressure from Philadelphia (5-5-5). He also scored in stoppage time to give the Union a 1-1 draw with Toronto on April 1.

Toronto (1-7-6) was playing with just 10 men after 41 minutes and extended its MLS winless streak to 11 matches.

Bradley Wiggins out of Tour de France race

LONDON

Team Sky says defending champion Bradley Wiggins will not race in this year’s Tour de France because of a knee problem.

The British rider withdrew before the 13th stage of the Giro d’Italia two weeks ago because of a chest infection. Team principal Dave Brailsford says “with illness, injury and treatment Brad has gone past the point where he can be ready for the Tour. It’s a big loss but, given these circumstances, we won’t consider him for selection.”

Wiggins became the first British rider to win the showcase race last year.

Phelps’ horse wins stakes race at Pimlico

BALTIMORE

Odds-on favorite Cerro won the $75,000 Canonero II Stakes for 3-year-olds by a head at Pimlico on Saturday. His ownership includes 18-time Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps.

Cerro ran 11/8 miles in 1:51.81 and paid $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10. He led to the far turn before Dynamic Strike moved to his inside and they battled the rest of the way to the wire.

Dynamic Strike returned $2.80 and $2.10, while Dreaming of Jazz was another 123/4 lengths back in third and paid $2.40.

Cerro is owned by Team Valor International, whose partnership includes Phelps and his former coach, Bob Bowman.

Hop Skip and Away captures Reilly Cap

OCEANPORT, N.J.

Hop Skip and Away took command early and raced to a 23/4-length victory over Chief Carlson in the $60,000 John J. Reilly Handicap at Monmouth Park on Saturday.

Ridden by Pedro Cotto, Hop Skip and Away covered six furlongs in 1:09 4-5 in winning for the 10th time in 57 career starts. The Joe Pierce Jr.-trained 8-year-old returned $21, $9.80 and $5.60.

In all his previous starts, Hop Skip and Away had never been in front through the first quarter of a mile. The traditional closer had won all nine of his races coming from the off pace.

Chief Carlson paid $13.60 and $6.80. It was another length and a half back to Bombast, who paid $3.80 to show.
