MORGANTOWN, W.Va.

West Virginia’s third “green” public school is opening today.

Officials have scheduled a ribbon-cutting and tours for this morning at the $16 million Eastwood Elementary School in Morgantown.

It’s Monongalia County’s first environmentally friendly school but the third in the state.

The others are Hilltop Elementary School in Marshall County and Spring Mills Primary School in Martinsburg.

The U.S. Department of Education gave Hilltop Elementary an award last year for its recycling practices.

Spring Mills was awarded LEED Gold Certification last summer. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, which is a sustainable building evaluation developed by the United States Green Building Council.
