Softball World Series postponed by weather

OKLAHOMA CITY

The NCAA postponed the two games scheduled at the Women’s College World Series on Friday night because of severe weather. Plans to make up the games were not immediately announced.

Tennessee had been scheduled to play Washington, with top-seeded Oklahoma facing rival Texas on Friday night.

The teams involved were staying away from Hall of Fame Stadium and sought shelter in a downtown parking garage near their hotels. Representatives from Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas said they left their downtown hotels to seek shelter at the Cox Convention Center, which has an underground parking garage that connects through tunnels to downtown Oklahoma City.

Erin Gabriel of Poland is a member of the Tennessee team.

Local umpires busy during regionals week

The Youngstown Metro Umpires Association was well represented during OHSAA regional tournament play this week.

Among those being assigned baseball regional contests were Jeff Davis, Gary Jennings, Ken Mills and Tony Swindler.

Softball regional umpires include Paul Bevalacqua, Jim Ferraro, Dom Flaviani, Pat Gaia, Rob Luklan, Diane Martino, Anthony Montana, Pat Montana and Michelle Speaker.

YSU’s Dosch 2nd-team Academic All-American

Youngstown State junior third baseman Drew Dosch has been voted to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America second team for his combined efforts during the year on the field and in the classroom. This is the second straight season the Canal Winchester native has been voted to the second team. He joins women’s basketball player Brandi Brown as YSU Academic All-America selections in 2013.

Dosch was named first-team All-Horizon League for the second straight season in 2013, leading the conference with a .434 on-base percentage and 36 walks. The junior also ranked in the top five in hits (68), batting average (.338), slugging percentage (.488), runs scored (40), doubles (15) and triples (3).

In the classroom, Dosch holds a 3.96 grade-point average as an integrated social studies education major.

Little Scrappers win tournament at Akron

The Mahoning Valley Little Scrappers won the 10-under division of the May Main Event baseball tournament held May 18-19 in Akron by Nations Baseball. The Scrappers were undefeated on the way to the title.

Team members include Anthony Massucci, Dominic Parise, Austin Vogt, Austen Price, Brendon Kilpatrick, Elijah Taylor, Jared Mindek, Connor Meyer, Jordan Sheehan and Nicholas DeMonica.

Andersen suspended for today’s Game 6

NEW YORK

Chris Andersen was suspended Friday by the NBA for his altercation with Tyler Hansbrough, leaving the Miami Heat without one of their best big men as they play the Indiana Pacers in Game 6. The league also upgraded Andersen’s foul to a Flagrant 2.

Andersen knocked Hansbrough to the floor from behind with 9:02 left in the second quarter Thursday, then shoved him backward after Hansbrough got up. Andersen still wouldn’t back away when a referee stepped in, and the league said in a statement that he “resisted efforts to bring the altercation to an end.”

Blackhawks, Kings set for Western final

CHICAGO

The Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings are in the Western Conference finals after a few bumps along the way.

The Blackhawks and Kings are poised for what could be a tight and lengthy series, with Game 1 at the United Center today. The Kings already have more playoff losses than they did a year ago when they went on a 16-4 run to capture the Stanley Cup as an eighth seed. The Blackhawksrallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Detroit in the conference semifinals, taking Game 7 2-1 on Brent Seabrook’s overtime goal to remain in the hunt for their second title in four years.
