1972:Democratic vice-presidential candidate Thomas Eagleton withdraws from the ticket with George McGovern after disclosures that Eagleton had once undergone psychiatric treatment.

1991: President George H.W. Bush and Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev sign the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in Moscow.

2003: The Vatican launches a global campaign against gay marriages, warning Catholic politicians that support of same-sex unions is “gravely immoral” and urging non-Catholics to join the offensive.

1988: The Shenango Conservancy is trying to raise $120,000 to save the Kidd’s Mill Bridge in Pymatuning Township, the last covered bridge in Mercer County and the only intact all-wood truss bridge east of the Mississippi.

Four former small-town kids from Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio are inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in Canton: Fred Biletnikoff, Mike Ditka, Jack Ham and Alan Page.

1973: East Liverpool police are looking for a savage killer who bludgeoned to death three people in a used furniture and antique store on Dresden Avenue. Dead are Earl Tweed, 76; Linda Morris, 22, and her 4-year-old daughter, Angela Lynn.

A 16-month-old Garretsville boy, Ryan Oros, is killed in a collision between a car driven by his mother and a Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department cruiser at state Route 45 and N. Palmyra Road in Ellsworth Township.

Thomas Cain, 45, of Youngstown, an Erie- Lackawanna Railroad employee, is fatally shot and his 60-year-old wife is assaulted by a young man who entered their unlocked home.

1963: The U.S. Department of Agriculture orders that every airplane leaving Youngstown Municipal Airport will have to be sprayed inside and out with DDT to combat the spread of Japanese beetles.

Mayor Harry Savasten suspends a worker in the water department indefinitely following a firecracker incident at the water works that injured an acting foreman.

1938: Ohio Gov. Martin L. Davey speaks to 8,500 during rallies in Youngstown and Campbell, defending his decision to call in troops during the Little Steel strike and calls his opponents, Democrat Charles Sawyer and Republican John W. Bricker, “pantywaists.”

Charles Slory, a 52-year-old unemployed pottery worker, shoots and kills his wife, Florence, 46, after a brief argument while the couple were seated on the front porch of their farmhouse near Lisbon.
