Ohio treasurer's report details savings in office

COLUMBUS (AP) — An annual report from the state treasurer shows that he’s saved Ohio more than $2 million by cutting operating expenses this budget year.

Treasurer John Mandel released his report today. The first-term Republican says he’s reduced payroll in his office by more than $1.7 million, among other changes.

Mandel says his office has updated previous practices, such as switching to electronic banking instead of driving checks to the bank. He says he’s also saved the state more than $23 million in future interest payments by refinancing debt.

Mandel faces re-election next year. Democratic state Rep. Connie Pillich, of suburban Cincinnati, has said she will challenge him.
