The Youngstown State University Athletic Department has reached a new four-year radio broadcast rights agreement with Clear Channel Radio Youngstown and will remain on 570 WKBN and 1390 WNIO “The Sports Animal”.

That joint announcement was made by Ron Strollo, YSU Executive Director of Athletics, and William E. Kelly, Jr., Vice-President/Market Manager Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s Youngstown Radio Cluster.

Clear Channel Youngstown will continue to broadcast all football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball games, weekly coaches shows and special athletic events.

McGee to be inducted into golf hall of fame

EAST PALESTINE

Former PGA pro and East Palestine resident Jerry McGee will be inducted into the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame on Aug. 5.

McGee turned pro in 1966 and joined the PGA Tour in 1967.

He won four tournaments in his career and played in eight Masters Championships.

His best finish at Augusta was fifth.

He also played on the 1977 Ryder Cup team.

McGee retired from the tour in 1981, but returned for a brief stint on the Senior Tour in 1993.

April Lude will play softball at Mount Union

Western Reserve graduate April Lude has committed to attend the University of Mount Union and play softball.

Lude, a 5’4”, shortstop, was named first team ITCL and second team all-state.

She plans on majoring in nursing and is the daughter of James Lude Jr. and Lori Percy.

Phantoms announce preseason schedule

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Phantoms announced their 2013 preseason schedule.

The club will play five preseason exhibition games while participating at a pair of regional showcases in September in preparation for the 2013-14 season, their fifth the United States Hockey League.

The Phantoms are in the inaugural USHL Atlantic Challenge where they will play three exhibition games, Sept. 6-8 in New Jersey.

Additionally, the Phantoms will play their final two exhibition games as part of the first USHL Fall Classic East showcase, which will be held Sept. 13-15 in Indianapolis.

Man accused of threatening Tygart

DENVER

One of the men charged with threatening U.S. Anti-Doping Agency CEO Travis Tygart shortly after the agency stripped Lance Armstrong of his Tour de France titles has made his initial appearance in federal court.

Robert Hutchins of Sandy, Utah, made a brief appearance Monday, where arrangements were made for a public defender for Hutchins.

His arraignment was set for Monday.

Hutchins faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

Another defendant, Gerrit Keats of Clearwater, Fla., had his initial hearing postponed until Aug. 8. He faces the same charges in a separate case.

Johannsson asks for switch from Iceland

CHICAGO

The U.S. Soccer Federation says forward Aron Johannsson wants to switch national team programs from Iceland to the United States.

The USSF submitted an application for Johannsson on Tuesday to FIFA, soccer’s governing body. FIFA approves applications for switches if all the requirements for the submission are met.

A 22-year-old Mobile, Ala., native, he grew up in Iceland and scored one goal in 11 appearances for Iceland’s under-21 team.

He appeared in eight qualifiers for the 2012 UEFA Under-21 Championship, which meant he can’t switch affiliations without FIFA’s approval.
