In celebration and remembrance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society will have an Civil War Summer Day Camp for students age 7 to 14.

The Turning Points Camp runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Aug. 9 at the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, 325 W. Federal St.

The center will be transformed into a hybrid 2013 and 19th-century location with the center’s spaces serving as battlefields, Ford’s Theatre, a Council of War room, and more while using state-of-the-art media and education technology. Participants will explore all aspects of the war, from the politics and leaders to the civilian struggle and military life. Interactive lessons will include debates, mock elections, the Manual of Arms, 19th-century games and chores, and more.

Child porn charge

COITSVILLE

A Hop Drive man was arrested after an investigation that began in March over child pornography.

Paul Schumacher, 50, was taken into custody after he was charged Tuesday in Campbell Municipal Court with one count of pandering sexually oriented material involving minors, said Pat Mondora, Mahoning County Sheriff’s detective.

Mondora did not have a lot of details, saying that the sheriff’s office assisted a state agency in the investigation.

Mondora said Schumacher is expected to be arraigned Friday.

Free smoke alarms

WARREN

Warren Fire Department is sponsoring the Save A Life Smoke Alarm Initiative for Warren residents who have families, seniors or children living in their homes.

Tamper-resistant smoke alarms containing a power cell that will operate the detector for up to 10 years will be installed by participants provided by the HandsOn Volunteer Network. Those who receive the tamper-resistant alarms will be chosen based on fire fatality statistics and need.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the United Way of Trumbull County, 3601 Youngstown Road SE, for installation training. Volunteers then will be assigned to homes and will install alarms through 2 p.m. Participants will be sent out in teams of three to ensure safety.

A light breakfast will be provided before the training, and all volunteers will receive a SALSA T-shirt.

NNO parade, picnic

Youngstown

The city of Youngstown will host a National Night Out parade and picnic from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wick Park pavilion.

Line-up for the parade will be at 4:30 p.m. at the corner of Park Avenue and Elm Street, with the parade beginning at 5 p.m.

Refreshments will be served immediately after the parade in the Wick Park pavilion.

The event is sponsored by the city of Youngstown, FOP Lodge 28, the Black Knights, Blue Line 4 a Cure, Pride Youngstown, and 3rd Ward Councilman Nate Pinkard.

Family Garden Day

YOUNGSTOWN

Family Garden Day will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens. Children and families can spend the afternoon engaged in hands-on activities, botanical crafts and storytelling. Visitors will be able to see a new demonstration of bees behind glass in the family garden. The event is free and open to the public.

Streetscape golf outing

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown CityScape is offering a new summer tradition, Streetscape-Swing, Scramble & Shake golf outing, to raise funds to continue the Streetscape project to prolong the growth of a better downtown area with the community support.

The event is Aug. 16 at Henry Stambaugh Golf Course, 202 Gypsy Lane. The golf registration is at 3 p.m. followed by a 6:30 p.m. cookout and party. The cost is $50 per golfer or $25 for just the cookout.
