NILES

Grief 101, a program presented by Hospice of the Valley bereavement facilitators, is offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 8 at St. Joe’s at the Mall, Eastwood Mall, Niles, and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Austintown Seniors Center, 112 Westchester Drive, Austintown.

The program will explain the grieving process and its impact on people and families. Support materials will be distributed. It is open to the public free of charge. Registration is not required. For information, call 330-549-5900.

Arthritis program

The Beeghly Oaks Rehab Center, 6505 Market St., is offering the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program free of charge from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Aug. 6. Individuals can attend one or more classes and it is not necessary to have attended previous classes.

Developed specifically for people with arthritis, the program is safe for all ages and is taught by Arthritis Foundation-trained and certified leaders. The class can be done seated or standing.

Family Fun Day

The Breckinridge School of Nursing, located at ITT Technical Institute, 1030 North Meridian Road, is offering a Health Fair and Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10.

This weight-management program teaches how to add a healthy balance to life with focus on nutrition and fitness. It will have over 50 local health-care providers to answer questions on health-related topics and services. There will also be free screenings, including blood pressure, glucose, and posture; clinical demonstrations; a farmers’ market; auction; free fun zone for families with face painting, balloon animals, a bounce house, and free kids identity kits.

Weight-loss program starts next Tuesday

NEW CASTLE, PA.

Beginning Aug. 6, Jameson Health System is offering the Drop 10 in 10 Highmark wellness program designed for participants to lose 10 pounds or 10 percent of their body weight in 10 weeks.

Rochelle Rashid-Nebel, a registered dietitian with a masters degree in exercise physiology, will conduct the classes, which include a combination of educational lecturers and experimental activities.

The program is free to Highmark members, with a nominal fee plus a $20 materials fee charged to non-members. Classes are noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays Aug. 6 through Oct. 8 at the Jameson Hospital North Campus, 1211 Wilmington Ave., New Castle. Pre-registration is required. Call 724-656-4270.

Physician of the Year

COLUMBUS

The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians has named Dr. John M. Surso of Medina its 2013 Family Physician of the Year.

In practice for 33 years, Dr. Surso is president of Family Medicine Associates of Medina Inc. – Summa Physicians Inc.; and is on the faculty of The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Dr. Surso, who received a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Case Western Reserve University and earned his medical degree from the OSU College of Medicine, completed his residency training at the Family Practice Residency at Akron City Hospital.

He will receive the Family Physician of the Year Award at the 2013 OAFP Awards Dinner on Aug. 10.
