All of Hawaii on tropical storm warning
HONOLULU (AP) — All of Hawaii is under a tropical storm warning as a system makes its way toward the Big Island and Maui.
The National Weather Service said today that Tropical Storm Flossie was moving west at about 16 mph. Sustained winds of 45 mph extend outward some 100 miles from the storm's center.
The service previously issued only a watch for Kauai and Niihau. But it has upgraded that to a warning and says a small change in Flossie's track could result in higher winds on the islands.
The National Weather Service says the storm has weakened but will remain a threat for up to three days. It says dangerous waves are already hitting the eastern shores of the Big Island.
Television footage aired on Hawaii News Now from Maui showed high surf breaking on rocks near Hana around 7 a.m. local time.
