DOCTORS

Steve P. Stamos, son of Peter and Mara Stamos of Campbell, has received his doctor of pharmacy degree from Lake Erie College of Medicine.

Dr. Stamos ranked in the top 10 percent nationally and was inducted into the Rho Chi National Honor Society for Pharmacy.

He was awarded the LECOM Academic Excellence Award and is the recipient of the 2013 LECOM School of Pharmacy Exceptional Community Service Award. Stamos has his work on a “Beginners Guide to Chemotherapy Induced Nausea and Vomiting” pending publication.

Stamos is a 2004 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. He graduated cum laude from Youngstown State University in 2010 as an honors and scholars program graduate, and earned two bachelor’s degrees in biology and chemistry. At YSU, he completed research in biochemistry on the study of free radical oxidation.

Stamos has accepted a residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Doctorate

Dr. Jarret Ruminski received his doctorate degree last month from the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Ruminski is the son of Vicki and Jerry Ruminski.

He is a 1999 graduate of Hubbard High School and earned his bachelor’s degree cum laude in 2004 and a master’s degree summa cum laude in 2007, both in history, from Youngstown State University.

As an undergraduate, he was a recipient of the Crandall Scholars Scholarship. As a graduate student, he was awarded the YSU Quest Award, the B’nai B’rith History Graduate Award, and the April Caruso Student Organization Service Award.

At University of Calgary, he was a graduate assistant for Dr. Frank Towers and was honored with the Dean’s Entrance Scholarship, the Chancellor Norford Scholarship, a graduate research scholarship, a social sciences and humanities thesis research grant, faculty of graduate studies doctoral scholarship, a social sciences and humanities graduate conference travel grant, and a department of history graduate travel and research support scholarships.

His dissertation, “Southern Pride and Yankee Presence: The Limits of Confederate Loyalty in Civil War Mississippi, 1860- 1865,” was successfully defended and approved Nov. 16, 2012.

He is teaching a course at the University of Calgary titled “Encounters in History: Violence and Social Conflict.” He lives in Toronto, Canada, with his wife.

HONORS

Jessica Valsi of Youngstown has been selected to participate in the 2014 Ohio Legislative Service Commission’s Legislative Fellowship Program.

Founded in 1963, the nationally recognized and competitive program takes place at the Statehouse and the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts in Columbus, and provides participants the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in state government.

In addition to working with members of the Ohio General Assembly, fellows take part in monthly educational seminars that examine different aspects of public policy.

Valsi, a graduate of Youngstown State University, is one of 24 fellows selected for the 2014 program. LSC fellowships are professional, paid, full-time positions. Valsi begins the 13-month program in December.
