Diocese offers online youth ministry classes

The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Diocese of Youngstown will offer online youth ministry training classes. The sessions are geared to adults who work with middle school, high school and college-aged youths in a parish, school or club setting.

“The Dimension of Family and Community” will be Aug. 26-Sept. 9. Participants will learn how to facilitate the development of community among youths, their families and within the church and society, including the development of small faith communities by youths from different cultures, spiritualties, or pastoral models. Register by Aug. 16.

“The Component of Justice and Service” will be Oct. 14-28. After this class, participants will be able to engage youths in the social mission of the Church in accord with Catholic Social Teaching. Registration by Oct. 4.

Students from the dioceses of Raleigh and Baton Rouge will join those from the Diocese of Youngstown in these classes, which will enrich the discussion boards with various insights and experiences, encouraging deeper thought and interaction.

The primary professor will be Dr. Charlotte McCorquodale, who preceived the 2002 National Youth Ministry Award from the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry for contributions nationally.She has served in parish, school, diocesan and university ministry settings for the past 30 years. She serves as an international educator, researcher, and consultant for the fields of lay ecclesial ministry, youth ministry, and e-learning.

Associate professor Cindee Case is associate professor. She is director of the Office of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Youngstown, and administrator for this Youth Ministry Online Training Program.

The training program consists of 12 modules that will provide tools for meaningful ministries for the youths of today. The program is built sequentially, but students can start with any course (except 12). Students may take as many or as few modules as desired.

Each module has been approved for 10 general hours by the Diocesan Office of Religious Education. Fees are $40 per module to include access to the online materials, assistance with technology as needed, and facilitation by Ministry Training Source trained facilitators, plus $15 for a course book. For students seeking college credit, take three modules per semester to comprise a course for $110, plus tuition rates, plus $45 for course books.

The next semester of courses begins with Module 7 in October.
