Police said a guardian of Nina Riley, 15, had reported her missing Wednesday; she is believed to be a runaway. She reportedly was last seen on Vine Street. Police did not release a physical description, but a photo shows her with long dark-brown hair, blue eyes and a nose stud on her left nostril.

Frank Crash dead

greenville, pa.

Hempfield Township police were called to the home of Frank R. Crash about 9 a.m. Thursday in the 300 block of Mercer Road and found him dead, according to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV.

Crash was the owner of an auto-recycling business. District Attorney Robert Kochems confirmed in a statement that Crash, 76, was killed. Pennsylvania State Police and investigators from the district attorney’s office are assisting in the investigation. No suspects have been identified.

Laser-pointer charge

A township man was indicted by a federal grand jury this week, accused of aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft. A news release from Steven M. Dettelbach, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, said Travis D. Krzysztofiak, 34, is accused of aiming the beam of a laser pointer at a helicopter making an approach to Akron Children’s Hospital June 15. The case was investigated by the FBI and Boardman Police Department.

Charged in crash

WARREN

Corey L. Davis, 36, of Woodview Avenue Southwest, is charged with several offenses after a crash Wednesday afternoon on Southern Boulevard that injured him and two passengers. Police said Davis was traveling about 80 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone when the vehicle went off the right side of the road at 1194 Southern Blvd. NW and struck a tree. It happened at 5:05 p.m. Davis was taken to St. Joseph Health Center, while Demetris D. Ball, 53, of Lener Avenue Southwest, and Kevin O. Parks, 21, of Starlite Street Northwest, were taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital. When Davis is released from the hospital, he will appear in Warren Municipal Court to face charges of driving or having physical control of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving under suspension and reckless operation.

School supplies needed

The Warren Family Mission has started its school-supply collection for this year and asks the public to make donations by Aug. 16 at its 2671 Youngstown Road location from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday or 361 Elm Road location from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Items needed include bookbags, notebooks (college-ruled and wide-ruled), crayons, glue and glue sticks, folders, rulers, colored pencils, washable markers, loose-leaf paper, book covers, binders, pencils and pencil sharpeners, pens, erasers, scissors, hand sanitizer, protractors, compasses, pencil boxes and facial tissues.

Man found dead

SLIPPERY rock, Pa.

Pennsylvania State Police at New Castle reported a man was found dead at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Slippery Rock Creek. The victim’s identity will not be released pending notification of relatives. At 5:30 a.m. Thursday, a passing motorist alerted state police that an individual was standing near a bridge on U.S. Route 422 above the creek. A subsequent search discovered the man dead. An autopsy will be performed at Heritage Valley Medical Center in Beaver. Rescue agencies involved in the search were Slippery Rock, Scott Township, Neshannock Township, Hickory Township, Volant, Perry Township and Bessemer volunteer fire departments, Canine S.O.S. and Medevac Ambulance. A state police helicopter also was used.

Urgent need for blood

CLEVELAND

The American Red Cross reported an urgent need for donors of blood platelets and blood types O, B and A negative. Blood products are being distributed to area hospitals almost as quickly as donations are coming in, said Christy Sabaka, communications program manager for the Red Cross Northern Ohio Blood Services Region, which needs about 900 donors a day to meet the need for blood. Eligible donors with blood types O, B and A negative are especially encouraged to give double red cells where available. Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be transfused to anyone who needs blood. Types A and B negative can be transfused to Rh positive or negative patients. The Corporate Volunteer Council of Mahoning Valley, 500 Market St., a program of Hands-On Volunteer Network, is having an informational open house Monday at Eastwood Field in Niles during the Scrappers Every Monday Matters baseball game. The Corporate Volunteer Council, developed to advocate, support and grow workplace volunteerism to improve the community, is a network of businesses and corporate volunteers who provide volunteer services to local nonprofit organizations and community projects. Special Olympics event

The Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities will host its first annual Fairhaven Poker Run and Corn Hole Tournament at the Fairhaven Niles Workshop, 420 Lincoln Way, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event will raise funds for Special Olympics and for disability awareness programs throughout Trumbull County. School repairs needed

LOWELLVILLE

Superintendent Rocco Nero said he’s hopeful work will begin next week to address the fire, smoke and water damage to Lowellville High School, caused after lightning struck its roof in mid-June.

Only minor repair work has been done since the fire, as the district is still waiting for a final report from the claims adjustor, Nero said.

“I’m praying” that repairs start soon, he said. The fire, which began at about 5 a.m. June 13, was contained to a 150-foot strip on the peak of the roof. However, water damage was evident on the second floor of the building, and heavy smoke damage is on the first and second floors.
