Ohio man gets life in immigrant's slaying

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A man who prosecutors say fatally shot an immigrant as part of a gang initiation has been sentenced to life in prison in northeast Ohio.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports 22-year-old of Corey Michael Hardison was sentenced in Akron on Wednesday for the July 21, 2012, slaying of Bhutanese immigrant Karma Tamang.

Prosecutor Mike Rickett said Hardison was given a mission to take a life in order to move up in an Akron gang. Another gang member solicited Hardison to kill an Akron police officer but he refused, saying he’d be willing to kill a “foreigner” instead.

Rickett said Hardison shot the 37-year-old Tamang once in the face as he sat in a car.

Hardison tearfully apologized to Tamang’s family in court.
