Man pleads insanity

WARREN

Thomas J. Starr, 28, charged with aggravated murder in the June 22 death of his mother’s boyfriend, has pleaded innocent by reason of insanity and asked the court to determine whether he is competent to stand trial. He also asked the court to determine whether he was sane at the time of his alleged offense.

Starr, of Greenville Road in West Farmington, is accused of killing Jeffrey L. Westfall, 53, and stabbing his mother, Lisa Frye, 46, at the home she and Westfall shared on state Route 305 just west of U.S. Route 422 in Southington.

He also is charged in the attack on his mother.

Robbery charges

BOARDMAN

Boardman police arrested a Warrensville Heights man who had a warrant for his arrest after police say he robbed the Subway on Market Street at gunpoint in November 2012.

James E. Workman III, 22, was picked up Tuesday by Boardman police at Mahoning County Area Court and brought to the station to be booked. He was taken back to Boardman Court afterward where Mahoning County Sheriff deputies took custody of him.

Police said Workman and another man entered the Subway with bandannas and masks covering their faces and robbed an employee at gunpoint. Workman and the other suspect took all the cash in the drawer once it was opened and put it in a black bag and ran southeast, around the northeast corner of the Town and Country Motel on Market Street, according to a report.

Woman sentenced

WARREN

Shawnda L. Worthy, 24, of Jackson Street Southwest, was sentenced to five years’ probation on one count of aggravated assault for an incident in May 2012 in which she drove her car into a crowd of women on Hamilton Street Southwest, injuring them.

Worthy received the sentence Wednesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Judge W. Wyatt MccKay ordered Worthy to attend anger-management classes, write an apology to Lavia Broadenax and have no contact with her. Broadenax was hospitalized as a result of her injuries.

Police said Worthy and Broadenax argued over a man before Worthy injured the women. Worthy was indicted on five counts of felonious assault but accepted a plea agreement calling for reduced charges.
