The Kelly-Miller Circus is coming to Canfield

Janet Freedy, 66, of will never forget when her grandparents took her to the circus as a little girl.
Her seven grandchildren will get to have the same experience Monday.
The Shriners’ Kelly- Miller Circus will have the elephants open the tents for adults and children at 4:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
“Grandma is trying to build a memory,” Freedy said to her two grandsons, as she purchased her tickets this week at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
This is the second year the Kelly-Miller circus will come to the fairgrounds with the Al Koran Shriners as its main sponsor. Part of the proceeds received from the event will go toward the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners operates 22 children’s hospitals in the nation; one of those hospitals is in Cincinnati.
To support the children’s hospitals, the Shriners organization sponsors carnivals, golf outings and circuses. The funding received from events such as the circus go not just to medical research, but also for transportation to get sick children to the hospital.
“There are about 300,000 of us [Shriners],” said Roger Neff, of the Al Koran Shriners. “Our mission is to have a good time raising money for children’s hospitals.”
Freedy was happy to know the money raised at the circus will go toward helping sick children.
Knowing that “is even better,” Freedy said. “I always like to give to those who support children.”
This year’s circus will bring back the elephants, tigers, dogs, clowns, acrobats and more. At 9 a.m. Monday, the elephants will raise the tents for everyone to come and watch.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has sent a letter to Canfield Mayor William Kay and Animal Charity Humane Society Director Talia Musolino, cautioning about abuse and asking them to watch out for how the elephants are handled.
Freedy wants to make sure her grandchildren from age 2 to 11 appreciate the circus, because today children “do not appreciate the smaller things in life.”
Tickets for the circus are $10 for adults and $6 for children age 2 to 11. Tickets can be purchased at the fairgrounds administration office or Oven Fresh Pizza in Canfield. Tickets also will be sold the day of the event. Free parking is available.
