The State College Spikes at the Mahoning Valley Scrappers baseball game Tuesday was rained out.

The two New York-Penn League teams will play a doubleheader at Eastwood Field today, beginning at 6:05.

Each game is seven innings.

United Way has 2014 Super Bowl raffle

The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley has partnered with the NFL Alumni for a 2014 Super Bowl Raffle.

A winner will receive a trip for two to Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey on February 2, 2014, or a $5,000 cash prize.

There will be a second prize of $1,000 and a third prize of $500.

Tickets are on sale for $100 each.

Dick Bedio selected

Youngstown Metro Umpires Association member Dick Bedio of Mineral Ridge was chosen to umpire the NSA Girls Fast Pitch Class A World Series in Chattanooga, TN.

Bedio was selected after being evaluated at a NSA tournament previously held in Virginia.

The last time the weekly six-division program was completed was on June 22.

Lance Armstrong finds support across Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa

Cyclist Lance Armstrong says fellow riders have been generally supportive of him this week during an annual bike ride across Iowa.

Armstrong is participating in part of the weeklong event known as RAGBRAI, a ride that starts at the Missouri River in western Iowa and ends at the Mississippi River.

It’s the first extended public appearance on a bike since he ended years of denials in January and admitting he doped to win seven Tour de France titles that have since been stripped.

Armstrong told the Des Moines Register, which sponsors RAGBRAI, that riding in the event allows him to stay connected with the sport he loves.

Kiwis rout Italians in Am Cup challenger

SAN FRANCISCO

Emirates Team New Zealand routed Italy’s Luna Rossa by the biggest margin yet in the America’s Cup challenger trials and clinched the right to advance to the Louis Vuitton Cup finals.

The Kiwis took a 7-3 lead over Luna Rossa, which fell farther behind at each turning mark on San Francisco Bay.

The Kiwis finished 7 minutes, 14 seconds ahead of the Italians, who officially will be ruled a did not finish because they weren’t within 5 minutes of the winners.

One of the rudders on the Italian catamaran sank into the mud as it was launched in low tide before the race. The Italians had to remove the rudder and repair it.

Walsh keeping busy upon return to game

LONG BEACH, Calif.

Kerri Walsh Jennings is getting a lot of the attention as the FIVB Grand Slam opens at the World Series of Beach Volleyball, even though she’s not playing for another four days.

The three-time Olympic gold medalist is making a comeback after she gave birth to her third child and first daughter, Scout, in April.

She was supposed to compete in the Long Beach event — international beach volleyball’s return to the U.S. for the first time in 10 years — as part of her re-launch but she withdrew because of an abdominal strain.

She’ll still compete here Saturday with Whitney Pavlik in the inaugural World Series Cup.
