Police investigation nearly complete
BOARDMAN
Jack Nichols, township police chief, said the internal investigation of two officers who were put on administrative paid leave after shooting and killing 30-year-old Daniel A. Fitton during a standoff on Cook Avenue on July 3 is nearly complete.
One of the officers, he said, is back to work, but he did not give any names. He said that when officers are in a position to kill someone, it takes a mental toll on them. He said that sometimes the officer receives hate emails.
Nichols has been in contact with the officer still on leave and said this officer is “kind of touchy about it.” Once the investigation is complete, Nichols said both names will be released.
He added the department offers counseling for officers in this situation.
Traffic violations
BOARDMAN
The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Boardman Township Police Department are reminding motorists that it is illegal to obstruct an intersection.
“Ohio law states that no driver shall enter an intersection unless there is sufficient space on the other side of the intersection,” said Lt. Nakia Hendrix, Canfield patrol post commander.
This is a problem on U.S. Route 224 eastbound at South Avenue in Boardman. Construction is causing traffic backups, but motorists must obey the law as not to further complicate the congestion.
Troopers and township police officers will have an increased presence in the area targeting this violation.
“We want to warn and educate motorists so this driving behavior stops and traffic flow can improve,” said township police Chief Jack Nichols.
Attempted arson
BOARDMAN
Boardman police and fire departments are investigating an attempted arson that occurred just after midnight Tuesday when a drain- cleaner bomb exploded on the rear deck of a Boardman woman’s Park Harbour Drive home.
When police arrived, they discovered a lot of smoke and several small pieces of aluminum foil on the deck’s floor close to sliding glass doors, according to a report. A melted, plastic Coca-Cola bottle also was found on the deck.
Boardman firefighters sprayed the deck with water and took the plastic bottle. There was no visible damage to the deck, and the woman said she didn’t see or hear anyone prior to the incident.
